It was enlarged by David Bryce in 1849 and then again by Robert Lorimer in 1899.
The keystone of one of the previous churches can be seen high on the outside of the wall to the south of the building.
There is an inscription on this stone which states “Heir is ane hous bult to serve God”.

'Stay passenger, read; here interred doth ly
A witness 'gainst poor Scotland's perjury.
Whose head once fix'd up on the bridge-port stood
Proclaiming vengeance for his guiltless blood'

Archibald Campbell was the 1st Marquess of Argyll and James Graham was the 1st Marquess of Montrose. In St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.
Memorials to two men who were on opposite sides in the War of the Three Kingdoms in the 1600s. Both were caught by their enemies and executed. One is for the anti royalist Archibald Campbell (1607-1661) and the other is for the Royalist general James Graham (1612-1650).

An crop from the ‘Liston’ window in St Fillan’s church, Aberdour. Worth a visit if you are passing. A tranquil 900-year old church, next to the Castle. “It shows a Celtic missionary (St Fillan?) preaching to a cross section of the inhabitants of Aberdour, including men & women, young & old, rich & poor, including a priest, fisherman, farmer, shepherd & soldier. The background is the Firth of Forth, Inchcolm and, in the distance, the Pentland Hills to the south west of Edinburgh. It is the work of an unknown London artist. The inscription says, To the Glory of God and in loving memory of the Rev. John & Robert Liston ministers of this parish from 1723 to 1796 and their descendants the Rev. William Liston, minister of Cardonald Parish and Thomas Liston, merchant, London. Rev Robert Liston was the Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1789, his grandson Sir Robert Liston was a Surgeon noted for his speed and skill.”
There are several beautiful stained glass windows in St Fillan’s Church, Aberdour, but I particularly like one that shows fishing boats in the Firth of Forth, with Inchcolm & the Pentlands (if I were to guess… West Kip, East Kip & Scald Law?? maybe?) in the background.

Visited Iona for the first time today. Such a gorgeous, peaceful place and it felt a long way from the violence and irrationality happening in the world.

A simple yet picturesque church on a rise overlooking the Tay, by architect Thomas Martin Cappon, is our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek.
Built in 1887 for £1000, the limited budget meant the original interior was somewhat austere.
