When Covid hit I was at a big corporation, and I was furloughed, given a severance eventually.

I hired on at a family-owned business, but sales are down 65% this year. Today is full circle. Furloughed and offered a buyout.

So I'm taking a hiatus. Here's a deer. Peace!✌️😶‍🌫️

A small hummingbird perches on a horizontal twig. His chest is rufous and his neck has the typical iridescent red and green gorget. But he has his head extended so far you can see a wide stripe of white feathers underneath. It's an unusual look to me.

A very large Douglas fir tree that is almost completely covered in a wide variety of lichen and moss. Definitely some standards like broom moss, and the old man’s beard but more types of lichen than I can shake a stick at. I’ll try to provide some detail in comments ☮️

I believe it’s broom moss, but they’re also appears to be quite a bit of lichen and I am not sure what variety.

This one is a male. The body is mostly gray. The lower chest and abdomen is mostly tan. The wings (which you can't really see) are brown. The face is black. There is a cap of rufous, and a topknot of black feathers.

All the little quail hatched out today. The hen had laid a bunch of eggs in a planter and she hunkered down under last season’s dried-out basil. I went out to check on them today and they were just leaving the nest. I counted 11 on the ground and another 5 still bopping around in the planter.

This bird would rather freeze than flee trusting its camouflage so completely it lets danger come within steps.

In the grassy hills and oak woodlands of the southwestern United States and Mexico, this secretive ground dweller moves like a shadow through tall grass.
