Oct 2022 – a photo from a visit to Toto Gorge, a flank collapse of nearby Karioi (an extinct stratovolcano). Standing at the railing of the weathered wooden viewing platform, one is presented with a stratum of views and edges: of the platform; of the gorge; of a small breaking wave on the Tasman Sea's shoreline; of the wide-open horizon and (l)edge of the world. The gorge and its rugged, terraced cliffs are verdantly blanketed with native shrub and brush. The far below surf is but a scribbled line of white crayon along a sliver of a black sand beach. The Tasman - a tranquil, cerulean mystery – is almost like a mirror. Above it all, the sun’s rays are gentle, with just a gleam of a kiss on the horizon; the sky holds no cloud. It seems many breaths are being held here this day…along the edge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karioi - Te Toto Gorge. “Fifteen lava flows make up the 150 m (490 ft) cliffs of the Gorge showing many large augite crystals (phenocrysts) up to 15 mm (0.59 in).”

Sep 2023 - a visit to the Tree Cosy in a nearby suburb. Multi-coloured knitted art drapes a large Pohutukawa tree. "Knitted graffiti - or 'yarn bombing' as it's also known..."

..i don’t know for sure what’s after death.. but i’m going somewhere.. and it’s pretty.. just like i know i came from someplace.. so when someone i love dies.. i miss them, for me.. but know they’re happy where they are…

it's in-between..
dark of the fall..
moon of the rise.
i think there's something..
in that motionless place..
no one speaks to.
it's where you taste lightning & swallow thunder..
then you don't feel it anymore..
it's over.
and you carry on..

When you look out and see a squirrel nibbling. What more can the heart say pleases it? Such fragility, such strength. The blessings of nature are many, the sweetness of existence a walk into acceptance that now is all that matters.

Busy aura of the falling night. Crickets are singing for monsoon to drown the skies and I join them with smiling lullabies. I feel alive in this season, aglow. Remembering the rain will wash the slate clean and new chapters can claim.

The lake stands still, seems like years ago I let the wrath of those beloved sink there. Words silence better in the grey, clouds press on change heavily but with sympathy. The lake stands still, after all these years, awaiting the next storm, like me.

Sometimes, it's all doors or walls, bricks listening and wood smiling, lounges that remind me of The Shining. Somewhere on this timeline, my inner screams may be heard just as loudly as a mountain's sigh, time locks many avenues, eventually.

Here is the latest watercolor haiga by Cendrine Marrouat. The sky is blue with hints of pink and light whispers of grey clouds. There are four bird silhouettes, flying staggered, over the upper left and the upper right. In the foreground is a mossy green mountain that peaks on the left with a black, upright, round-canopied tree atop. Behind it, an orange-brown mountain peaks on the right. The overall feel of this painting is tranquil, cozy, and slightly dusky. This lovely scene conjures the perfect background for Cendrine's haiku:

Suddenly

The painting on the left is Rainy Night, Etaples (1912) by the American artist William Edouard Scott. This rainy cityscape is layered with cool tones and subtle notes of warmth. His heavy impasto emphasizes the dusky blue night background. Light to medium grey buildings contrast the darkness with teal gradients. Shades of yellow and pink glow from the two street lamps on the left, and from the windows on the right. Scott’s inclusion of figures carrying umbrellas, over the reflections of light along the empty street, conveys wet pavement and a misty atmosphere.

The poem on the right is by today’s featured poet, Danielle Grace:

Leaving

Escaping wild like rains
Fallen free of summer veins
Filling up grass blades
With fiery Autumn shades
Painting bright memory stains

Numbers piling high in gains
As once branched glory wanes
Upstaging mother tree seeds
Embracing escaping rains

Harvest embers grounds lain
Crunching underfoot again
Winding flags in breezes made
Intensified as sunlight fades
Circling around urban drains
Rains—wildly escaping.

Here is a black and white nature photo of an acorn split in have, revealing its heart shape inside. The seed half rests in the upper left side, its top slightly tilts left on a fallen log. In the background, textures of cracks and wood chips dip in and out of the bokeh.

Fun fact: The average oak produces 2,000 to 10,000 acorns a year. During the tree’s “mast year,” which occurs every 2-5 years to ensure survival, it produces 10,000 acorns. Also known as bumper crops, this massive output helps the seeds escape being eaten. Nature is incredible. I couldn’t help but wonder, what about our output of love? Is more love in our lives the answer to our survival? Focusing on building supportive communities, friendship, and nurturing the land feels right. For us, every year can be a mast year; this realization inspired the latest alliterative senryu from my journal.

There's a point where life will shake you and when it does, it demands answers you have cloaked all your days. Those answers are best reflected on when you realise they are actually questions and how long you wish to burn. Would time be reversible, perhaps choices would carry more weight.

Easy to overlook, hard to ignore up close. The European Starling doesn't get much love, but catch one in spring light with fresh catkins budding around it and suddenly everything makes sense.

Two Turkey Vultures perched at the tops of separate trees, both with wings fully outstretched in a sunning pose against a deep blue sky. Their bare red heads, brown mottled plumage, and silvery flight feathers are visible as they face slightly toward each other.

Morning Sun Ritual
3-2026

The horaltic pose — wings spread wide to catch the morning sun. Turkey Vultures do this to warm up, dry off, and bake off bacteria after a night's roost. Unglamorous reasons for a genuinely majestic sight.

Aerial landscape view looking west from the summit of Mount Diablo, California, across rolling green hills layered in atmospheric haze toward the San Francisco Bay Area. The foreground shows dark green pine trees, giving way to wave after wave of emerald ridgelines dotted with scattered suburban development. In the far distance, approximately 30 miles away, the faint silhouette of the San Francisco skyline is visible on the left horizon, with the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge faintly discernible to the right, partially obscured by coastal haze. The sky is pale blue-white with thin overcast clouds. A small aircraft is barely visible near the top center of the frame.
