I built a personal AI assistant on a Mac Mini. Within 48 hours, cheap models had poisoned its memory with fabricated colleagues, fictional file shares, and an imaginary costume party. Here is what I learned.
1/ Last year I was running a 6-hour alignment job on a remote server. Then I realized: I forgot to start screen or tmux.
My laptop was about to die. Panic mode.
Here's exactly how I saved that process without killing it:
Nice progress — one of our members has just published her first paper on her PhD journey. The study shows how different soil sampling designs can dramatically change biodiversity estimates across animals, bacteria, and fungi. 🐀🦠🍄🧬
Heatmap comparing richness ranks across soil sampling designs for three organism groups: animals, bacteria, and fungi. Three side-by-side panels, with various sampling designs by rows, and habitats (marked by tree icons) by columns.
How much does sampling design matter in soil biodiversity surveys? A lot. Our new manuscript shows how diversity changes with sampling design, depth, subsample number, and pooling. I'm especially happy this is the first manuscript from Meirong Chen's PhD work, and very proud of her progress.
New publications are springing up rapidly among our PhD students — like fungi after rain! Nice work — and ironically, this time it's all about the desert mycobiome! Who would’ve thought our publication “rainfall” comes from a desert? 😄
I've been building Claude Code skills for a month. Turns out I was missing half the picture.
Thariq from Anthropic just published lessons from hundreds of skills they use internally. 9 categories, dozens of patterns.
Excited to share my first PhD paper!

Really happy to contribute to a better understanding of fungal diversity in extreme environments.

Thank you brother 🙏🏻❤️
Ph.D. defended and the long read journey ends in frozen lands.
Deep thanks to @sanslan.bsky.social and @tedersoo.bsky.social. Special thanks to @owenwangensteen.bsky.social for a demanding and fair defence as the main opponent.
Thanks to all @myco-microbio.bsky.social members for their support.
Next month, @ewels.bsky.social (Product Manager for OSS at @seqera.io)will be joining the Bioinformatics CRO webinar series to discuss #Nextflow, @nf-co.re, and exciting new features for reproducible bioinformatics at scale. 👇

Really excited to see this paper out!! Led by @vtcoop.bsky.social we show that if you use cold and warm paleoclimates together, you can reduce uncertainty in Earth's climate sensitivity by quantifying the pattern effect and more precisely constrain future climate change www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
EMBL is deeply saddened by the passing of our Interim Director General Peer Bork, a pioneering scientist who left an indelible imprint on life science research in Europe and beyond.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Still processing the news of Peer Bork’s passing. During TREC and TARA projects in Estonia, I witnessed firsthand his scientific depth and human warmth. His legacy will echo through generations of microbiome research. RIP.
Oh no… such shocking news. I’m really touched by this. A big loss for the computational biology community. 😓 RIP
very sad news. Peer Bork was one of the leaders of our field, a wonderful scientist, and he's much too young to be gone. www.embl.org/news/embl-an...
🧬 Long-read metabarcoding is powerful, but chimera filters can trash good reads. Our new study benchmarks three algorithms on full-length ITS and shows how false positives distort results.

Do you (like me) create a bunch of conda environments, then later forget what they're for, when they were last updated, or which tools are in them?
If so, you might this little project: github.com/rrwick/conda...
