Haem biosynthesis regulates BCAA catabolism and thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue - Nature Metabolism Inhibition of haem synthesis is shown to lead to the accumulation of branched-chain amino acids in the brown adipose tissue of mice, which reduces UCP1 levels and impairs thermogenesis.

Translational control of leukemic metabolism and disease progression Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematological cancer with a 70% five-year mortality rate. Relapse occurs in approximately half of adults treated with intensive chemotherapy, while responses to targeted therapies are short-lasting. Frequent mutations in signaling pathways, such as FLT3 tyrosine kinase and RAS, lead to dysregulated mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1)and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, increased protein synthesis, enhanced mitochondrial fitness, and metabolic adaptations that drive leukemic cell proliferation and survival. Here, emerging evidence supporting the unique role of eukaryotic initiation factor 4F as a key driver of the expression of proteins regulating leukemic cell metabolism and survival and the potential therapeutic benefit of targeting this pathway pharmacologically in AML are discussed.

The Futile Creatine Cycle powers UCP1-independent thermogenesis in classical BAT Nature Communications - Thermogenesis by brown adipose tissue has long been thought to be solely controlled by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Here, the authors show that energy expenditure in brown...

Today in @naturecomms.bsky.social we show the #FutileCreatineCycle plays a key role in #thermogenesis, independent of UCP1. We also challenge the belief that brown adipocytes lack enough ATP synthase for thermogenesis. Congrats to Jakub Bunk! @mcgillgci.bsky.social

'You never catch up.' Why the gender pay gap is so much worse for caregivers The gender pay gap widened slightly from 2022 to 2023. The gap is worse for women of color and widens as women age because of their caregiving duties.

The gender pay gap only rises with age:
15-24: 15%
25-34: 20%
35-44: 25%
45-54: 31%
55-64: 34%
65+: 37%
And there's a motherhood penalty: The pay gap for women w/o kids is 12%; with kids=25%.
