Earlier in 1520 Pope #LeoX issued the bull #ExsurgeDomine, condemning 41 of the #95Theses issued by #MartinLuther and threatening #excommunication. On #ThisDayInHistory, Luther refused to recant and burnt a copy of the bull publically, and so he was excommunicated on 3 Jan. 1521.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1517, the #95Theses of #MartinLuther were released. Sent initially by letter to the Archbishop of Mainz, they may also have been posted to church doors, though this may be a myth. The key was that they were mass #printed, and hence could spread unchecked.
