The kind of morning where the mountains breathe.
Fog drifting through the pines, shadows layered across the valley, and everything moving just slow enough to feel unreal.

Cat tails and other wetland plants blur into a painterly look as they undulate in the wind.
Yesterday was hot and unusually windy at Alaksen National Wildlife Area, British Columbia.
I was mesmerized by the cat tails and other marsh plants at the mouth of the Fraser River undulating in the wind.

A froglet with a small tail remaining sitting on a sandbar in a stream. There is a mosquito sitting on the froglet's back.
A froglet that still has a sizable tail -- visually more than half the froglet's total length. There are four mosquitoes that appear to be feeding on the froglet.
I'm on a tear this week finding Northern red-legged frogs. Yesterday at Burns Bog, Delta, BC I saw several froglets.
They were at various stages of metamorphosis, absorbing their tails and spending time on land.

A Northern red-legged frog peeks out of a mossy crevice in the bank of a stream. Only the front half of the frog's body is visible.
It was hot and dry at Belcarra Regional Park, BC, so the pools where I look were dried up. I decided to clamber along a small stream and saw two Northern red-legged frogs (rana aurora aurora).

A female sooty grouse, June 2025.
She was foraging among the tall grass and flowers at the lookout halfway up Mt Seymour just a few metres from the parking lot.
I was struck by the variety of plumage on the head, and the bright yellow ridge above the eye.
