This is the finished illustration showing the plant with roots and a cluster of basal leaves, as well as three pairs of leaves higher up the stem. the leaves are bumpy and textured, darkish green, on the end of stalks at the base but clinging to the main stem higher up. The flowering head is clusters of tube shaped purple flowers, not very big, with star shaped calyxes. On the right hand side there are details painted on one flower face on and sideways, and a cross section of the seed in the calyx.

Detail of the leaves of #Betony #Stachysofficinalis. This is a close up and shows two overlapping leaves. You can see the way Ive used three layers of green to give the bumpy texture of the leaves, and tiny lines of white gouache to show the leaf hairs where they overlap. On the edges of the leaves I use a dark grey to show the hairs. The leaf stems are square in cross section, so you can see they are ridged in this detail, and hairy like the heart-shaped leaves.

*Well mostly native, it has slowly spread outwards from Florida that was its original range.
