NIH Researchers Develop Improved Blood Test for Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed a blood test that could transform the early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Pancreatic cancer is often discovered only after it has spread, leaving few treatment options and resulting in survival rates below 10% after five years. The new test builds upon existing biomarkers and adds two newly identified proteins—aminopeptidase N (ANPEP) and polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (PIGR)—that show clear differences in people with early-stage pancreatic cancer. When combined with established markers CA19-9 and THBS2, the four-protein panel achieved a detection accuracy of 91.9%, correctly identifying early-stage cases about 87.5% of the time while maintaining a low false-positive rate of 5%. The results, published in *Clinical Cancer Research*, indicate that the test not only detects cancer with high sensitivity but also distinguishes it from non-cancerous conditions like pancreatitis, reducing the chance of misdiagnosis. Lead author Dr. Kenneth Zaret of the University of Pennsylvania emphasized the potential for this test to serve as an early screening tool, especially for people with genetic risks, family history, or pancreatic cysts. Larger clinical trials are now planned to confirm its effectiveness in asymptomatic and high-risk populations.
