A great blue heron - a large dark blue bird with long yellow legs, long brown neck and a long yellow beak - glides over the surface of flat blue water as it slows before landing. Its big yellow feet hang down at an angle behind it just an inch above the water.

The way great blue herons land in water is so graceful. This one did a nice glide before stopping

A harlequin duck preens itself on wet rocks on the shore of the ocean. Its face is pointed down as it nibbles on the festhers of its left shoulder. Its sides are rusty red, striped of bold white are on its back, shoulders, neck, and face. Faint dark blue fills the space on the rest of its body. It has a single white perfect circle behind its eye on the back of its head.

These harlequin ducks are so awesome to see. The colors and patterns on them are beautiful

A small crab hangs by a single claw from the jaws of a hooded merganser as the bird swims through brown water. The bird's body is brown, black, and white. Its head is all black except for a round patch of white on its hood-like head feathers. Its head feathers in this shot are flattened out, however, after it shakes the crab violently, sending small droplets of water flying in all directions.

Flanked on both sides by the pointy green needles of a pine tree, a small bird looks slightly to the right and towards the camera. A thin spiderweb stretched from the tree near its feet to its beak. The bird has a bright yellow stripe on the top of its head which is surrounded by black. White stripes outline the black. The rest of its body is a dull hellow color.

Kinglets are fun birds to photograph. It's always a challenge to get a good shot, so getting one is really rewarding

Two white birds, one above the other, fly in front of distant crashing ocean waves. The bird that's above has its wings open wide as it makes a slight banking turn, giving us a great view of its underside. Gray feathers on the edges of its wings and on top of its head are surrounded by white feathers on the rest of its body. The bird below shows off some of the black feathers on the top of its wings as it flaps its wings downward.

Always nice to have bright morning light on the beach for action shots of birds, like these in-flight sanderlings

Against a solid and vibrant blue sky, a bald eagle spreads its wings wide and soars through the air. The angle is from almost directly below, so we can see every dark brown feather on its wings and underside of its body. Its feet stay close to the underside of its white tail feathers. Its yellow beak is large, sharp, and curved. The feathers on its head are white.

Always so fun to have a huge bald eagle fly over you, especially when you've got your camera ready

Raising its wings as it begins to fly off the ground, a light brown bird splashes through a shallow pool on the beach. This bird, a type of curlew, has a very long and slightly curved beak made for digging critters out from underneath the wet sand. It has a relatively long neck and slender head. Its body is relatively large and is covered in a zigzag/striped pattern of light and dark brown.

iNaturalist tells me this is a Eurasian whimbrel, but I don't see other sightings of this where I live

Standing on black rocks at the edge of a small pool of water, a gorgeous harlequin duck faces to the left as light drops of rain fall around it. These birds, particularly the males like this one, are very colorful. Their heads are dark black with vertical stripes of bright white and bright orange. The sides of their heads appear blue in the right light. Their bodies are the same mixture of colors: bright orange on their wings and black, blue, and white all over their bodies.

A first for me, which is rare at this point for where I live. The gorgeous male harlequin duck 😍🦆

A small yellow and black bird begins to fly off of a green pine tree branch. Its wings are blurred by motion, but its body is still in the same position it was a moment before it began to dly away. It faces towards the camera and its body leans to the right away from the branch. The top of its head has a bright streak of yellow surrounded by an outline of black. White outlines its eyes.

Unsurprisingly, this golden-crowned kinglet was on the move as I shot. I don't think they ever sit still
