super late for yesterday's #BirdOfTheDay (Alt) theme - #BirdsYouLove and let me share some owls :D

p.s. i have an owl wallpaper pack (ko-fi.com/s/e55940cdd6)
A female belted kingfisher perches in a bare tree, looking to the left. Her head is blue with a blue crest. She has a white belly with a blue stripe and a brown stripe (the brown stripe shows she's a female). Her back and wings are blue. Kingfishers are very hard to photograph as they don't sit still for very long. But this one was such a good girl and I took a ton of pics of her!
The problem with the #BirdOfTheDay prompt today is #Winterlight which is SORELY lacking in SoCal. And the alt prompt is #BirdsYouLove and I love SO many birds! I also don't have any pics of most of my faves.
So I will post a pic I'm super proud of that I got yesterday: a female belted kingfisher.
First, I apologize for the quality of these photos. They reflect Horace’s shyness, my limited kit (only 200mm zoom), and my lack of skill. In this photo, Horace gives us a good look at his male Horned Grebe mating plummage, with the fiery “horns” sprouting on each side of his head. His eyes and beak are hard to make out, as they blend with his black or very dark brown “face”. Horace is surrounded by the blue Atlantic Ocean, just off shore of Marblehead Neck in Massachusetts. He is without any Horned Grebe companions. More on our story in the next ALTs
This might be my worst “published” bird photo, but I love getting a look at Horace’s weird lobed foot that is out of the water for some reason. Pretty cool evolutionary adaptation! So, let’s get to the story. My wife and I “met” Horace before we went to Jordan for my wife’s work in 2020. You might remember that bump on the road, called COVID, hit on the late winter of 2020. We lived nearby and enjoyed walks next the ocean and Marblehead harbor. One day, I was doing a bird walk and ran into excited birders, breathlessly asking if I’d seen the Horned Grebe (a rarity). I ultimately saw Horace that day, which was a very cool addition to my life list — my one and only Horned Grebe. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a “friendship” with Horace, this handsome and wonderful little sea bird.
Here, Horace appears to be preparing to fly. Sadly, we never saw him fly. We think he might have been injured and was unable to make the long trip to western Canada for breeding. Back to the story. I excitedly shared my “find” with my wife and we loved seeing Horace on our frequent sanity walks. He fell in with “the coastal regulars” — Common Eiders, Mallards, and the occasional Red-breasted Merganser. And he seemed to be content diving for fish with his new family. Well, summer came along and we had to leave for Jordan. We bade Horace farewell and flew across the Atlantic and Mediterranean to what would be our home for four years.
Here’s Horace showing off a bit. He must have been feeling saucy that day 😊 So, after our first school year in Jordan, we returned to Marblehead to leave with my wife’s parents for the summer. And who was there to greet us but Horace. We marveled at the resourcefulness and pluck of our little friend and saw him almost every time we took our routine walks. The same story repeated for a couple of years, until finally we returned to Marblehead only to find no Horace. We like to think his wings finally healed and his migratory hard-wiring kicked in, and Horace met up with his Horned Grebe friends up in Saskatchewan. By the way, I must disclose that male and female Horned Grebes look very much alike — Horace might have been a Hortense. I just learned this this evening 😊
Hi #BirdSky crew!
Here’s a VERY LATE offering for Monday’s alternate theme, #birdsyoulove. These photos are pretty dreadful, but their subject, Horace the Horned #Grebe was our favorite bird in the world for about three years.
I’ll share our story of Horace in ALT

Still, Pelicans rock. They look prehistoric and watching these big ass birds precision dive is pretty impressive. #EastCoastKin

Posting this coal tit again for Alan’s winter light/birds you love themes. Rarely catch this wee bird but managed this photo a few days ago, in the dappled light of the wooded wetlands area, bordered by a field

I posted my #birdsyoulove entry just before I saw yours--had I been able to get such a beautiful capture of this stunning little bird, my heart might have burst! Gorgeous!
I just love this little gem, although the female to his right seems completely unimpressed.

It's the 3rd day in a row that our park by the river has been blanketed by fog. We decided to give it a shot. The #BirdOfTheDay alt theme is #birdsyoulove and 1 of my faves was there! Always a thrill to see one! A Belted Kingfisher, female! #birds #photography #EastCoastKin

@alan678.bsky.social. I love any bird exhibiting an interesting behavior that I can learn from. I've been watching these Sandhill Cranes and Mallard for weeks. I believe the cranes raised this duck. They treat him like their colt. #bird

Photo taken over The Vale of Glamorgan 17/01/26 The Blue Tit is a tiny, vividly coloured, and energetic garden bird, often described as one of the most attractive visitors to UK bird feeders. Very small and delicate, measuring roughly 12 cm (4.7 inches) in length, which is about half the size of a robin. They are best recognized by a striking bright blue "cap" or crown on top of their head. Their cheeks are white, bordered by a thin black line that runs through the eye and circles around to the chin. They have a bright yellow belly (which can sometimes have a greenish tint) and a blue-green back. The wings and tail are a contrasting shade of blue. They have a very small, black, and delicate-looking bill, with dark grey-blue legs. Younger birds appear similar but are generally duller, with more yellowish-green plumage and a yellowish wash over their white cheeks, rather than the sharp, bright contrast of adults.

A close-up photo of a pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) floating on water in profile, facing to the right. It is a small brown water bird with a short pale bill that has a dark spot in the center of it, a fluffy white tail, and alert brown eyes. The lighting is warm-hued, around golden hour, and the rippling water around the grebe looks lilac and golden-brown.
Here's a pied-billed grebe that's in #Winterlight and also coincidentally one of my newer favorite birds, because they look so dang cute. #BirdOfTheDay #birdsyoulove
