It has a bluish-grey back, a white underbelly with fine, rusty-orange barring, and strikingly bright yellow or orange eyes. It is fast, long-tailed, and has a small head, often identified by its orange-toned chest.

These are Chilean flamingoes engaging in courtship. They generally pair for life and can live to be in their fifties (at least in captivity). I studied these and some were over 50 years old. This pair, amongst others are in a captive setting. This is an archive photograph from years ago when I did my MSc at the local Zoo. I live in Devon, UK. This species is Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

He is completely relaxed lying on his tummy, his head resting on the ground, eyes closed and both flippers out stretched at the side of him. I thought he was dead and was thinking about penguin chick survival mortality figures when he opened one eye and gave a half shake before settling back down like this. I wondered what was up in this photo - is tonsil inspection a part of the courting ritual? I think the female Northern Shoveler gave the male a good looking over and let him go on his way - but perhaps he had better luck after I had moved on at Ridgefield NWR this week.
