This close-up vertical photograph captures a dense, architectural mass of Mediterranean spurge (Euphorbia characias), likely the subspecies wulfenii, filling the entire frame with a captivating display of texture and form. The image is dominated by numerous, robust, and upright stems, each meticulously clothed in a spiraling arrangement of narrow, oblong, blue-green/grey-green leaves. The foliage creates a highly textural, almost sculptural, effect, with each plant forming a distinct, rounded, and brush-like head. The leaves are tightly clustered, lending a feeling of density and abundance. The overall colour palette is a rich, cool spectrum of green, ranging from deep, shadowy forest greens in the lower and background areas to vibrant, almost chartreuse, lime greens on the newer growth and developing inflorescences at the tips of the stems. Lighting in the photograph is soft and diffused, highlighting the intricate details of the leaves and the overlapping structure of the plants without harsh shadows. This even illumination emphasises the matt, slightly waxy texture of the evergreen leaves. The depth of field is shallow, allowing the central cluster of plants to remain in sharp focus while the surrounding plants gently blur into the background, creating a lush, immersive visual experience. The dense planting offers an impenetrable look, showcasing the plant's architectural quality prized in garden design. The scene is natural yet orderly due to the repetitive, starburst-like pattern of the foliage whorls. This plant is known for its ability to thrive in dry, sunny conditions and produces a milky, irritant sap when broken, a characteristic of the wider Euphorbia genus. The image is a study in natural geometry and shades of green.

I could tell you this magnificently autumnal staghorn sumac was in the historic gardens at some stately pile out in the country, but it was actually in the carpark at Aldi 🌱😀

A color photo of a beautiful Japanese Garden in WA State. This Botanical Garden is a favorite of locals & tourists for it's well-maintained grounds and varieties of nature. The image captures plants, flowers, a duck in a pond & Japanese Statuary. Vox enjoys visiting this garden but is not posting a photo of her in it. The photographers are known & the image is credited to both in the text of the post.

A wide view of the formal gardens at Château de Chenonceau, showing intricate geometric patterns of neatly trimmed hedges, flower beds, and topiary. Pathways divide the designs into ornate sections filled with bright spring colors. A raised terrace runs through the middle of the scene, and beyond the gardens a small village and rows of trees fade into a hazy sky.
Digging deep in the archives and found a film scan from 2001 of the gardens at Château de Chenonceau, if my memory is correct.

A grass path runs through the picture with beds of edibles and flowers on either side. In the middle distance the head gardeners cottage is set into one of the walls with a large glass house beside it. Beyond the wall tall trees line the horizon beneath a blue sky with white clouds. The garden consists of two sections divided by a spine wall – the pleasure garden and the kitchen garden, which supplies fruit and vegetables to the catering facilities at the site. This was once one of the most innovative gardens in Scotland –pushing horticultural boundaries in the past included the cultivation of peaches, nectarines and apricots gifted to Sir John Kennedy as early as 1730. The onion ‘Ailsa Craig’ was bred by a gardener working at Culzean in the 1870s.

A close-up, upward-looking view of a spherical purple allium flower against a vivid blue sky. The image focuses on the flower’s globe-shaped head, made up of many tiny star-like florets and unopened buds that radiate from the centre on thin stems.
