Marine flyways are the missing map we can use to boost seabird conservation (commentary) Last week, governments, conservationists and civil society from around the world gathered in Brazil for the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS-15). In a rare moment of unity, they formally established something scientists have long understood but never before mapped at a global scale: marine flyways. This decision may sound technical, but it represents one of the most important shifts in ocean conservation in a generation. For decades, we have celebrated the great migrations of land birds like cranes sweeping across continents and swallows stitching hemispheres together, but far offshore, another story has been unfolding, largely unnoticed. Seabirds have been navigating vast, predictable highways across the open ocean, linking nations, ecosystems and hemispheres in ways we are only now beginning to understand. At BirdLife International, our latest research revealed six major marine flyways used by more than 150 migratory seabird species spanning the waters of 54 countries. These routes are not abstract lines on a map, they are living, breathing pathways traveled by albatrosses – the largest of the seabirds – to storm petrels, the smallest – and many in between. The Arctic tern, the world champion of migration, travels almost 100,000 kilometers (over...

Algicidal bacteria as an eco-friendly mitigation of microalgae: an application paradigm shift to heritage conservation Microalgae, in the strictest definition, are eukaryotic, unicellular microorganisms that are photosynthetic and typically have an aquatic lifestyle1. Although cyanobacteria are prokaryotic and therefore not true algae, they are usually included because they share a similar physiology and ecology with eukaryotic microalgae. Moreover, photosynthesis originated around 3.5 billion years ago in cyanobacteria, with eukaryotes emerging much later, following 1–1.5 billion years of prokaryotic evolution2. This photoautotrophic ability enables microalgae to be widely distributed in aquatic environments with low organic nutrient levels, such as epilithic and endolithic niches3,4. For example, microalgae have been widely identified as pioneer colonizers on outdoor stone monuments and historical buildings5,6,7, particularly when water is available8,9 (Fig. 1a–e). Subsequently, their growth provides sufficient organic nutrients for heterotrophic colonizers, which are usually harmful microorganisms (e.g., archaea, bacteria, and fungi) to stone heritage10,11,12. However, case studies on microalgal colonization of heritage sites have been reported frequently, especially in stone heritage (Fig. 1f). Therefore, developing an efficient mitigation strategy to control microalgal growth is essential for the conservation of stone heritage. Over the past two decades, numerous bacterial species capable of lysing algal cells or suppressing algal growth—particularly those associated with harmful algal blooms—have been isolated and identified13,14. These bacteria...

In Ecuador, Increased Dangers at Sea Hinder Seabird Conservation Bobbing up and down some 10 miles from the port of Santa Rosa, Ecuador, Victor Balón turns off his motorboat and cuts up bits of fish. His crewman, Viejo, uses the flesh to bait hooks on a fishing line, which he slides into long PVC tubes fastened to the side of the boat. Every 20 hooks or so, he attaches a smaller line connected to a cement weight. It takes a tedious 20 minutes to place all 247 hooks inside the tubes, but the procedure comes with huge payoffs, I’m assured. Balón—or Flaco, as everyone calls him—throws the Minervita 2’s engine into gear, leaving a smack of jellyfish behind in the Pacific Ocean waves. Viejo tosses the first weight overboard and hooks come flying out, sinking immediately. He watches carefully and throws out weights at regular intervals. Two minutes and 38 seconds later, the entire 1,300-foot line has disappeared. On this hot and thankfully overcast April morning, Flaco is driving slowly so I can observe; at full speed, the pair can set these hooks in under a minute. As it is, I hardly see the bait zip into the sea, and that’s precisely the point: The faster the hooks sink...

Grizzlies Were Supposed to Be Reintroduced to the North Cascades, Now the Government Ignores Its Own Previously Approved Plans Plus, a new fun initiative to help protect public lands and waters

This story shows how an administration can stop publicly supported conservation efforts simply through inaction. Officials don’t necessarily have to do anything negative to affect conservation—sometimes, just doing nothing is enough to halt progress.

'Creative math' or conservation loophole? B.C. rethinks 30-by-30 after industry push In January, Todd Stone, the president and chief executive officer of the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia, told the crowd assembled for the association’s conference about a lobby meeting he had with Premier David Eby. Stone joked that he opened by congratulating the premier on his “success on 30-by-30.” The crowd began to chuckle as he continued his story about provincial and national targets for protecting 30 per cent of land and water by 2030. “You’ve actually accomplished 47 by 2025,” he recalled telling the premier. He then recounted asking: “Can we start having a conversation about pulling some land back?” That figure comes from a policy paper published in December 2025 by the association, arguing “up to 46.99 per cent” of British Columbia was protected land. That’s far more than the federal government’s figure of 19.9 per cent, and would surpass the province’s 30-by-30 pledge. According to Stone, a former minister under the B.C. Liberals, the comments led to the premier directing “the staff at the [Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship Ministry] to go back and look at all their numbers and sit down with us.” According to public records, the association lobbied at least a dozen members...
