#ChurchMonument Thomas Williams if Corndean died 1636. Kneeling effigy of painted stone. Rather crudely executed. There’s an empty space opposite him but his wife was never added. #Winchcombe St Peter’s

At first glance, a double effigy depicting a married couple in the church at Broughton in Oxfordshire, dating to 15thC. Look closer and it’s clear that it’s two effigies that have been pushed together. The knight wears a Yorkist livery collar and the lady a Lancastrian one #medieval #churchmonument
Repainting this tomb was a bold move by the Victorian restorers. I’m not sure they truly achieved authenticity… It’s believed to be the 14thC of Dir John de Broughton, in Broughton Church, Oxfordshire #medieval #victorianrestoration #churchmonument #medievaltomb
Wonderful Tanfield Monument in Burford Church, Oxford, which was apparently erected surreptitiously overnight in the chapel by Lady Tanfield after her husband’s death in 1625. Its most notable feature is that it is a cadaver monument #burford #churchmonument #transitomb
