Top view of an earwig with a generally brown body and characteristic pair of forceps-like pincers on the end of their abdomen
Even though the variety of moths to our moth light is limited currently, we’ve seen a few other interesting #inverts.
Like this Echinosoma sp. earwig. This has never been recorded in WA before so likely been brought in with goods from overseas

A gorgeous macrolabic Forficula auricularia (Common Earwig) from this afternoon’s damp mooch in Shropshire #Dermaptera #Earwig
A small, brown earwig with straight pincers and no visible wings. Sitting in a plastic tube-cap, internal diameter 15mm.
Surprise find at Stodmarsh yesterday. Tho' female Lesne's & Short-winged Earwigs are hard to separate, this one's size (c10mm head-and-body length) & dark appendages say Short-winged. #earwigs #dermaptera #KentNature
Got my first wiggy (Forficula auricularia) of the year at lunchtime! 🥰 #Dermaptera #Earwig

🎄 #InsectAdvent Day 14 is #Dermaptera appreciation day!
#Earwigs have cerci at the rear. These are curved in males and straight in females.
#FunFact: Unusually for insects, many #earwigs are devoted parents, cleaning & guarding their eggs & young.
Mal schnell beim #HexapoDezember reinschauen: Aha, #Dermaptera, sehr gut, weitermachen!
Also from today in NW Shropshire was this gorgeous Forficula lesnei (Lesne’s Earwig) 🥰 #Dermaptera #Earwig
It was good to find a different species of earwig in Brittany last month! The lovely Chelidurella acanthopygia! 🥰 #Dermaptera #Earwig #Dermaptère #France
A male Common Earwig with much larger than normal pincers (macrolabic form).
Maggie inkcap fungi growing on woodchip mulch in a plant bed.
A new area of amazing, 'jungle'-style planting.
'Birdwatcher Bill'. One of a number of sculptures around the garden.
Looking for earwigs at Goodnestone Gardens in East Kent yesterday (with head gardener's permission). Only found Common Earwig, but this included several macrolabic males with big pincers. Also enjoyed the lovely gardens & café. #Goodnestone #Dermaptera #KentNature

A map of Kent (Watsonian vice-counties 15 and 16), showing tetrad records for the Short-winged Earwig Apterygida media. Thirteen black dots show records from 2000 onwards. Forty-five green dots represent tetrads where the most recent record is from 1970 to 1999. One yellow dot shows a tetrad where the most recent record is from before 1970. The map only shows records at tetrad resolution or finer.
Following the post by @vc40orthops.bsky.social regarding Short-winged Earwig at Wye Downs, I thought I'd produce an up-to-date map of records I hold for Kent. There are worryingly few records from 2000 onwards (black dots) - or is it just overlooked? #earwigs #dermaptera #KentNature
It's always a pleasure to find Lesne's Earwig (Forficula lesnei) - adult male and nymph - found separately from pines yesterday in Pwllheli #Wales #Dermaptera #Earwig
A good proportion of the male Forficula auricularia (Common Earwig) that I've found this year have been macrolabic. Such beauties! 😍 #Dermaptera #Earwig
Spidery-legged assassin bug with mottled orange abdomen, dark legs, and a large fearsome proboscis resting on the underside of a leaf where an earwig is resting.
Spidery-legged assassin bug with mottled orange abdomen, dark legs, has reached around the leaf and stabbed the brown earwig with its proboscis.
Spidery-legged assassin bug with mottled orange abdomen, dark legs, and a large fearsome proboscis is climbing through down a leafy goldenrod stalk with the lifeless body of its ear wig prey dangling from its stout, orange proboscis.

I had the good fortune to stumble upon a wheel #bug nymph that was stalking an #earwig, with predictable results! #Predation #Reduviidae #Dermaptera
It was nice to find a Lesne’s Earwig (Forficula lesnei) wiglet for a change! From yesterday’s mooch in NE Shropshire #Dermaptera #Earwig
A stunning macrolabic Common Earwig (Forficula auricularia) from west Shropshire this afternoon #Dermaptera #Earwig
On Sunday, I tapped this wiglet (Forficula auricularia) from a grass tussock onto my tray, where he was quick to find a hopper nymph to make a meal of! #Dermaptera #Wiglet #Shropshire

A map of Watsonian Kent (vice-counties 15 and 16, East and West Kent), with coloured dots representing records of Short-winged Earwig (Apterygida media) at tetrad (2km square) scale. Green dots (records from 1970-1999) far outnumber black dots (records for 2000 onwards).
Updating distribution maps for Kent Orthoptera and allies. This map for Short-winged Earwig suggests major decline. I've spent some time beating suitable-looking hedges, with no success (tho' my technique may be wrong) - has anyone had better luck finding this elusive insect? #dermaptera #KentNature
