Loss of India’s vultures may have led to deaths of half a million people Find could offer lessons for conserving key species in other places

They were nature’s cleanup crew. Eating carcasses, purifying the land, stopping disease.
Then we poisoned them.
Dogs and rats spread. Water soured. People died.
Vultures weren’t optional. They were essential.

DEMOCRATS DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY

Democrats are conducting oversight, demanding accountability for
wrongdoing and attacks on the rule of law, and are creating a record.
Their victories, he noted, have been “modest,” but they have, for
example, managed to force the administration to rehire employees at
the National Weather Service and succeeded in preserving U.S.
Department of Agriculture field offices in California.

Litigation has been more successful, Schiff said. Since January,
plaintiffs have brought more than 400 suits against the
administration, and courts have halted the administration's policies in
more than 100 of them. Wrongly fired civil servants have been
reinstated, funding has been restored to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, deportation flights have been grounded,
Trump's tariffs have been struck down.

“Ultimately, though,” Schiff said, “the most powerful check on
Trump's authoritarianism is not Congress. It is not the courts. It is the
American people.”
