I've DELIGHTED in wandering around, through & over numerous types of geological formations. Geothermal & hotspings are stunningly beautiful, intense & dramatic -wherever they are, all across our planet. (They are usually, almost always associated with volcanic, geologically active regions.) In color imaging it's glorious and dramatic with multiple hues crash & swirl around each other. But in monochromatic composition, you're equally entranced with the shapes, processes, contrasts & differentiation happening EVERYWHERE!!! -In this composition we're looking at -through a long, 400mm lens, at a place where the hot mineral water has moved onto other places. It has largely dried out, and has begun to breakdown & deteriorate. These places are interspersed among the active waters & deposits that are much more colorful. These such places are a wild array of largely a grayscale context of broken slabs, angles & stalactite & stalagmite (cave formations) type shapes. I can only describe this image as broken & breaking up mineral deposits that once were given shapes by cascading or drizzling hot, mineral water! It's a scene of haphazard decay, with TONS of shapes/angles & especially of great contrasts, and every shade of grey in between!

An occurrence of light-colored sand seems out of place among these otherwise stratified layers of shale and mudstone. The sloping sediments at bottom are composed of loose material that has eroded from the layers of rock above.

A fan of sloping, eroded sediment leads upward toward a sculpted butte of shale and mudstone. Upon the alluvium sit a number of shards and larger pieces of petrified wood that has weathered out of the surrounding sediments. More mounds are visible along the horizon line at left. The sky is featureless.
In the badlands, every rainstorm brings the promise of #new material exposed. Which can be a boon to those with an interest in paleontology.

The angled slope upon which they stand is highly eroded, showing deep channels and on transverse line of deposition that cuts across the slope horizontally. Part of the Norfolk, England coast is covered with innumerable smooth-edged, sea-worn stones - mostly flint - that, along with fossils, have washed out of the soft headland cliffs over past eons as the sea continues to erode it up to six and a half feet per year. This view looking west-nor-west, and parallel to the shoreline, is a vast, steep beach completely covered in countless smooth rocks of all sizes from brick-to pebble-to coarse sand. To the left of the image are soft cliffs, some sloping to the beach, covered in vegetation, and others more precipitous with exposed sandy subsoil. To the right, the cold sea, hued light brown by turbulent sandy sediment, is on its return tide with white caps on the waves. The sky is light blue, but almost filling the sky it’s being mostly upstaged by dramatic bright cumuli clouds coming over the headland in the distance, chased by the bright sun on the left, soon headed toward pre-sunset.

From one side a very small hole in a rugged & rocky geological formation is noticed. This view offers a small oval patch of sky blue through it. There are three or more patches of blossoming desert scrub vegetation growing on this rocky facing of the ridge of craggy stone. The vegetation is brightly lit by the sunlight.
In this view, a larger opening of an arch becomes apparent, after climbing up the harsh & craggy rock ridge. In looking through the hole of the archway is a patch of blue sky beyond the mountainous view that's now visible through it!
A vertical framing of the previous horizontal composition. This view contains the entirety of the arch/archway and its very rocky hole. It's a very-very brightly lit representation of the multi-colored geological formation.
Finally we are looking at the arch from its other side! The sky is blue but filled with whispy white clouds, looking the opposite direction! This geological formation looks entirely different from this side! Most of the rock is visible but darker. The rough upper stone archway is brightly lit. This backside of the ridge is mostly of a gentle grassy rise, up to the arch! You can walk right up to the formation, unlike the difficult climb up the ridgeline from the arches other side. (The grassy rise up to the formation isn't visible in this representation of the formation. Please note this; however it is worth mentioning the ease of the approach of the rock formation. Perhaps on this side of the ridge it was once a gravel or sandy beach of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The lake covered much of the Great Basin thousands of years ago.)
