There was a slight frost this morning and another harder one forecast tonight. I fear for the Camellia in my patch and the Magnolias in the neighbouring gardens. After so much mild weather this might be too much for the delicate flowers.

A little Robin redbreast stands on newly turned over soil in a garden border next to some green shoots that look like early stalks of Daffodils that will not flower for some months. Various roots lie on the soil surface where I have been digging out the pervasive Ground Elder weed and there are some green leaves behind the bird.

He may be a #HolidayRobin but he seems to have found something else while ferreting around our front garden this week. Can those be Daffodils pushing through the soil by our little friend. Maybe Spring is around the corner.

A Robin perches on the edge of a garden wall next to some green moss. The background is of some grit and spent compost from a planter I had emptied on to a border. There are also ground elder leaves, which I later removed. They are a menace.

I took so many pictures of my garden assistant yesterday that I shall be sharing them for some time but for today I shall limit it to one #HolidayRobin You’re welcome.

The bark of our Acer Griseum, also known as the paperbark maple or blood-bark maple, is lit up dark orange by the rising sun, the peeling bark creating shadows. The blurred background of blue sky and neighbouring green trees plus the garden fence provide contrast to the zinging colours of the tree’s bark. The Acer Griseum is a small, spreading deciduous tree and in addition to its attractive peeling, papery chestnut-brown bark has leaves with 3 leaflets, downy and whitish beneath, turning brilliant red and orange in autumn. All the leaves have now gone but hundreds of tiny “aeroplane” seedlings still hang on the branches.

It is still raining heavily here, so for #Stunday I have chosen this shot of our Paperbark Maple lit up by a morning sunrise from earlier in the week. Cheating? Possibly but there will be other sunny Sundays, I’m sure.

A peach coloured rose, darker at the centre, stands out in the morning gloom after a brief snow shower. Most of the other roses in our garden have wilted and all our other blooms were zapped by a heavy overnight frost on Tuesday night.

This little flower seems to have defied the odds. Yesterday’s frost and this morning’s snow have left it bowed but unbeaten.

Raindrops glisten on the purple spikes of a garden Thistle in today’s heavy rain.

A tightly-furled yellow rosebud on our David Austin Tottering-By-Gently plant with sun peeking out from behind the green covering that is slowly peeling away.

It has been a long day and I am tired after just a modicum of garden work but I saved this little rosebud to say goodnight with. I hope it blossoms tomorrow.

A delicate pink rose unfurls its petals in the gloom of our Surrey garden. The centre is darker. Floured and, just visible, are the yellow stamens. No sign, however of any pollinating insects. They realise that their work is done for this year. The rose is named Scarborough Fair and comes from the David Austin nursery in Staffordshire.

Another very mild day but grey skies again with not a hint of sun or blue sky. Never mind, here’s another rose to cheer us up. Scarborough Fair is another that refuses to admit summer is over.

Good morning from our little garden in an unusually dry and sunny south-east England after overnight showers. How about a quick chorus of “Raindrops on roses”?

Erysimum Bowle’s Mauve Wallflower with its rounded and veined petals freshly planted in a border. More flower buds are ready to burst out and a black/purple head of another bloom sits atop the stem of the plant. Hopefully it will go on flowering into November.

We can’t stop buying new plants even though we have a tiny garden but when you visit a nursery that has a sale and see something so perfect … well, you just have to find more space. I give you Erysimum Bowle’s Mauve Wallflower.

Autumn colours: a deep purple Virginia creeper twists through the bright red berries of a Cotoneaster shrub in our back yard.

A purple Clematis flower outside the front of our home is ready to unfurl as the day begins. The velvety petals of the flower are covered in fine wisps of white that looks as if it has been dipped in a freezer. The background is a neighbour’s brown gravel drive and wood trellis fence.
