It is characterized by its reddish-brown head and thorax, and a yellow and brown striped abdomen. These large hornets, are 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) in length, with queens being slightly larger than workers. They are considered one of the largest wasps in their native range.
