A medieval plot twist: the Great Ouse literally changed course - and so did history.
Find out how a flood, a bishop, and a few bold merchants made King’s Lynn boom.

As it was my second visit to Huntingdon and all I've seen of the place so far was the ring road, I thought I'd pop in and see what lies within #Huntingdon #Cambridgeshire #GreatOuse

After an inspiring tour of Joe Martin's wetland creations, a cooling (well, quite cooling, water 21.2°C, air 26.9), evening swim across the Great Ouse up the Wissey, my most beloved river.

The beautiful, silvery young Dace inhabiting the gravelly shallows of the Great Ouse banks were quite inquisitive and almost gave me a manicure.

On #WorldRiversDay some birds of River Great Ouse: Coot, Moorhen, Teal, Mallard, Heron habituated to the regular pleasure boat traffic & Great Cormorants unlikely perfecters of the art of perching on powerlines #BirdsSeenIn2021 #GreatOuse #Fens #Soham #Cambridgeshire #TheFens 4/4

Along the flood banks, looks like a war on moles from below & a war on voles from above (kestrels).
A bank of Snowdrops escaped from a dell of Ash & Oak at Modney.
Robins singing with gusto into the clear, bright late winter light. Still plenty of haws.

At confluence of Lark & #GreatOuse, where Great Crested Grebes fish overshadowed by the mighty 20m hill topped by #Littleport water tower, where once the sign must have pointed to #BuryStEdmunds, 25 miles away, now it is only to #Isleham, a destination for pleasure cruisers. 4/7
Inspired by a talk last night on the history of navigation along the #RiverLark http://www.stedmundsburychronicle.co.uk towards #sunset I took a stroll from #Prickwillow along the last 2 miles before she flows into the #GreatOuse & thence 25 miles to the coast. #MyWalk...
A pity that reservoirs eg in #Fens #Southery, don't include design features more attractive to birds besides gulls, Coot, Mallard, Tufted Duck & Great Crested Grebe. Not that I've anything against those species (sympathised with this Grebe on #GreatOuse in stiff COLD wind)! 2/5
