T-score compares a patient’s BMD measurement to the average BMD of a group of healthy young adults of the same sex and ethnic background and is calculated using the following equation: T-score = (Patient's BMD - Mean BMD of Young Adult Reference Group) / (Standard Deviation of Young Adult Reference Group BMD) Why it matters: T-scores indicate the patient’s risk of suffering a fragility fracture and their bone health status. A lower T-score means weaker bones and a higher risk of fractures. T-score categories (as defined by the World Health Organisation) are normal: T-score ≥ -1.0: Osteopenia (low bone mass): T-score between -1.0 and -2.5; Osteoporosis: T-score ≤ -2.5; Severe Osteoporosis: T-score ≤ -2.5 with fractures.
