Rainbow scarab illustrated in alternate colours
Did a rainbow scarab today.
Didn't turn out as nice as I'd like, but it's done, so I'll move on to something new next time.

Tiger beetle face! Reference photo from Ben Salb, check his stuff out, insane! That tiger beetle blue/green metallic is just so good.
I may have spent too long on this. I got carried away. But I had fun!

A praying mantis digital study, pink and purple background
Today's insect is a Zorak, no, I mean, a praying mantis, based off a photo off someone named Eric Lucy. I spent a little longer on this one, more like 1.5 hours.

Digital illustration of Linne's Cicada
It's a Linne's Cicada, originally for #invertober2024.
I fell off the Invertober train in 2024 when it got near the end. Started on this Linne's Cicada and could not finish the colour! So while I'm in a rut, decided to pick this one back up again to complete it.

A watercolor painting of an eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly. The colors of the butterfly are accurate: mostly yellow with black striping and body, subtle blues in the hindwings. The wing venation resembles bird feathers. It is supposed to be a top view of the butterfly in flight, so it flies toward the top-left corner of the watercolor paper. The piece is divided in half diagonally, where the butterfly takes up the majority of the bottom-right half, and green and brown foliage fills in the top-left half of the painting.
Started in December 2021, finished in December 2025.
I like what I tried to do with this, but I am no watercolor master so I'll just have to keep pushing myself with it.

Art of a death's-head moth from November 1 of 2013. The moth appears to fly toward the top-left of the canvas (cardstock.) Colours are mostly yellows, oranges, and tans, with some blues and purples to create contrast; the background is white. On the right portion of the art, there are dotted-swirls and leafy patterns incorporated into the hind- and forewings, and flowing off of the page to the right.

A photo of a stone relief showing several Egyptian hieroglyphics, from left to right: two five-rayed stars, an owl, and possibly a vessel with bow
This one really blew me away - wall carving from ancient Egypt was displayed to show some Roman graphiti but what got me was these hieroglyphs that are so clearly sea stars! I had never seen them before!

a Himalayasaurus has killed a smaller ichthyosaur, it swims away with the corpse still bleeding in its mouth Himalayasaurus is a kind of ichthyosaur (fully marine reptiles with four flippers, dorsal fins, and tails used for swimming), specifically a shastasaurid (a group of the largest ichthyosaurs from the Upper Triassic). Himalayasaurus was found in Tibet and unlike other shastasaurids had ziphodont teeth (teeth made for cutting) suggesting it ate large prey, rather than having no teeth like other shastasaurids
a Typothorax is laying eggs in its mound nest, its cloacal osteoderms move away to make sure they dont crush the delicate eggs. Typothorax is a kind of aetosaur (armoured herbivorous relatives of crocodiles and dinosaurs) that possessed an upturned snout and most curiously osteoderms around its cloaca
two Lunataspis aurora move towards the camera. the nervous system of the left Lunataspis is visible through its thin carapace, the one on the right is climbing over the left individual allowing the viewer to see its underside Lunataspis aurora is an extinct species horseshoe crab from the Late Ordovician of Canada. it was flatter than modern horseshoe crabs and lacked a fused abdomen, instead its abdomen was made of individual segments much like other arthropods. it was also very small being around only 3-4cm long
a Kunpengopterus sticks its tongue into a Weltrichia to lap up the sweet nectar within the cup of the flower-like structure, pollinating it in the process. two other bennettitale branches are seen in the back, all the branches are similar to the genus Kimuriella in growth form Kunpengopterus is an arboreal pterosaur (flying reptiles that flew using a bat-like wings) with a long tail, soft tissue crest, and potentially an opposed "thumb" on its hands Weltrichia is a male form genus of bennettitalian (flower-like plants). most species were probably wind pollinated, however, some were beetle pollinated, it's possible they could've also been pollinated by animals too. the female form genus counterpart of Weltrichia is Williamsonia, which is known from the Tiaojishan Formation, where Kunpengopterus is from. Weltrichia has been associated with the genus Kimuriella, however, no species are contemporary with Kunpengopterus, so this depiction of a Kimuriella-like whole plant is speculative
here's today's #Paleostream flocking sketches!!!
today we sketched Himalayasaurus, Typothorax, Lunataspis (i drew L. aurora), and Kunpengopterus (drinking the nectar from a Weltrichia)

A marker drawing of a non-specific carrion beetle. An implied skull is incorporated into the beetle's elytra and thorax. Contoured lines and stippling techniques were used, though the drawing is very simple overall. Colours are very limited, mostly black Sharpie, but there are also brown to pale yellow vein-like branches jutting out from underneath the beetle.

Closeup on a painted skateboard of a green pyraing mantis on pink background. Blue green along the edge of the board.
