A close up photo of a gray and black beetle with very long antennae from the side. The beetle has a gray head with black eyes. The segmented antennae emerge from just above the eyes and sweep back along the beetle's body. Te legs are gray with black feet. The body of the beetle is gray with black stripes.

A photo of a gray and black beetle with very long antennae resting on a white sheet along side a tan mantidfly and a tiny gray moth. The beetle has very long segmented antennae which sweep backwards along the sides of its body. It is capsule shaped with black markings on either side of the middle of its body which is overall gray in color. The mantidfly beneath it is tan and is curved slightly towards the beetle. Though the mantidfly is a fierce predator, the beetle was too large to be a potential meal (though it could dream...). To the right of the mantidfly is a tiny gray veneer moth.

A close photo of the head and forebody of a tan beetle. The beetle has long segmented antennae which arc towards either side of the photo over the front two pairs of legs. The beetle's glossy eyes form a half circle around the root of the antennae. The beetle's pronotum, the area just behind the head comes to a point on each side. The beetle is covered in many fine tan hairs.

A photo of the beetle from above showing its full antennae span and the enongated tablet-like shape of the body. The beetle's elytra, the hardened forewing is more brown, with the beetle becoming more tan nearer to the head. There is a single light tan spot just at the root of the elytra.,

Happy #MacroMonday. I continue the Longhorn #Beetle extravaganza with this fantastic Banded Hickory Borer, Knulliana cincta.

A photo of an elongate pill-shaped brown beetle from above at it rests on a white sheet. The beetle is in the process of cleaning one of its antennae, which is bent into a circle, one end in the beetle's mouth. The beetle is mostly overall dark brown and covered in fine hairs. There are faint tan arrowhead-like markings which gives this beetle its common name.

A photo of a mottled brown, tan, and gray beetle from above as it rests on light blue painted wood. The beetle has a thick tablet-like shape, it's surface covered in a mottled pattern of stripes and spots. The antennae are delicately curved in a S-shape.

A photo of a thin tablet-shaped brown and tan beetle from above. The beetle has long brown segmented antennae. The beetle is dark brown and covered in fin tan hairs. On the beetle's pronotum, the area just behind the head, there are 2 dark dots on either side of a vertical dark oval shaped dot which almost looks like a face in distress. At the end of the elytra, the hardened over-wing, there are 2 delicate spines which gives this beetle its common name.

We continue this year's exultation of Longhorn #Beetles with a selection of friends today.

1. Arrowhead Borer, Xylotrechus sagittus
2. Six-speckled Long-horned Beetle, Astylopsis sexguttata
3. Spined Oak Borer, Elaphidion mucronatum
4. Curius dentatus.

A photo of the dorsal side large rusty brown beetle on dried grass. The beetle has an overall tablet-like elongated ovoid shape. Its elytra, the hardened forewing is glossy and smooth. The pronotum, the area behind the head has a wavy dimpled texture along the sides. The head is triangular and the beetle has large black eyes and powerful mandibles.

A photo of another example of the beetle from the upper side as it rests on light blue painted wood. This example is a darker brown, but overall the same elongated tablet-like shape, glossy elytra, textured pronotum (though some spines can be seen on this one) and triangular head with powerful mandibles.

The Longhorn #Beetles I posted yesterday were medium to small sized. They can however get MUCH larger. This is the Hardwood Stump Borer, Mallodon dasystomus which can get up to 2 inches (5cm) in length.

A photo of a slender ovate brown and tan beetle with very long antennae from above. The beetle's body is slender and marked with dark brown and lighter tan longitudinal stripes. It has very long antennae, each one roughly 3 times longer than the body.

One of the more ridiculous antennae to body length ratios among Longhorn #Beetles is found in Hippopsis lemniscata, ANTENNAE FOR DAYS ๐Ÿ˜‚

A photo of a female Pine Sawyer beetle from above. The beetle is mottled brown, gray, and black which is effective camouflage against the pine trees it feeds upon. The beetle has an over all lengthened ovate (or tablet-like) shape and has 2 spines on the pronotum, the area just behind the head) This example's antennae are not overly long, roughly the same length as the body which indicates it is a female as the males antennae are much longer.
