Kilowatts to kilograms: How efficiently can LEDs turn energy into lettuce? Less than 1% of the energy powering the LEDs ends up in the lettuce head.

Energy-to-biomass efficiency isn’t a theoretical footnote — it’s where the economics and sustainability of controlled environments are decided. Quantifying these conversions is how the tech matures.

Canada’s Food Economy Has a Hole in the Middle — And We’re Paying for It We treat food inflation like a storm that will pass. The truth is, it moved in years ago and we’ve been paying rent ever since.

Canada’s food economy is showing structural gaps — rising prices, supply-chain stress, affordability squeezed. That fragility makes controlled-environment production more than climate-smart: it’s supply-chain critical infrastructure.

The GRIN2A Paradigm: Monogenic Psychiatry and the Precision Phytochemical Revolution A Mechanistic Framework for Targeted Intervention in Single-Gene Mental Illness

Controlled-environment systems are becoming essential for producing consistent medicinal plant compounds. Cannabis was an early case study, but the broader opportunity lies across many species. Precision photobiology and molecular farming will define the next chapter.

Immunity gene silencing increases transient protein expression in Nicotiana benthamiana Agroinfiltration of Nicotiana benthamiana is routinely used for transient gene expression in plant sciences and molecular pharming. Here, we depleted transcripts of 21 different immunity-related genes through virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) to identify genes that hamper transient expression in juvenile plants. These experiments uncovered that silencing of ethylene insensitive-2 (EIN2), receptor-like kinase CERK1, transcription factor regulator nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 1 (NPR1) and isochorismate synthase (ICS), increases transient GFP expression by 2-, 4-, 4- and 11-fold, respectively. Accordingly, the npr1a/npr1b double mutant of N. benthamiana does indeed facilitate increased protein accumulation when transiently expressed. These results indicate that glycan perception through CERK1, and ET and SA signaling pathways via EIN2 and NPR1/ICS, respectively, contribute to suppressed transient gene expression in frequently used juvenile N. benthamiana plants. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Thrilled to see this out!
