Charlotte Auerbach (1899-1994) was a German-born Scottish geneticist. She studied biology and chemistry at the universities of Würzburg, Freiburg, and Berlin, and initially worked as a secondary-school teacher in Germany. Due to her Jewish heritage, she was dismissed from her teaching position and moved to Edinburgh in 1933. She earned her Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Edinburgh in 1935 and later worked there, making significant contributions to genetics. Auerbach is best known for her research on mutagenesis, showing that chemical substances, such as mustard gas, could cause mutations in living organisms. Although her findings were not published for several years due to the political climate during World War II, they eventually led to the development of chemical mutagenesis and had a lasting impact on genetic research and cancer studies. Auerbach's contributions earned her honors, including election to the Royal Society of Edinburgh and several honorary degrees.

I put "GMO" in quotes because currently nobody in Europe knows what a GMO plant is and what not. The definition changes depending on who you ask and who is asking. A long story that I'll have to document one day.

Die zahlreichen bisher durchgeführten Versuche waren indes nicht yon dem erwarteten Erfolg gekrönt. Mit tier Einbeziehung immer weiterer Objekte in den Kreis der Betrachtungen zeigte sich vielmehr um so ausgeprägter eine starke Herabsetzung der Lebenseignung der Mutanten (Tollenaar, Gager und Blakeslee, Goodspeed und Olsom, Stein, Stadler, Timoféeff-Ressovsky, Delaunays, Langendorff, Stubbe, u. a.). Ihre Bedeutung für die Artbildung wäre erloschen, wollte man sie als ,,erbliche Erkrankungen" auffassen.

Over the next 25 years, she continued publishing on the effects of irradiation in ever-increasing detail, incl. on cancerous tissue, & chromosomal damage. Her work was instrumental in establishing & advancing radiation-induced #mutagenesis, #genetics, & #Antirrhinum as early plant model.
