Earlier this morning, I heard a Northern Flicker quite close to our house. Not unusual, as they are often in the woods nearby.
Just went to get a cup of tea, and there was one on one of our suet feeders! First time seeing one in our actual yard, so excite!

A brown bird, with a slim, rounded head with a gray nape is foraging on the grass in early spring. This is a Northern Flicker, one of nine woodpecker species that breed in the Adirondack Park. The Northern Flicker is considered a habitat generalist, favoring open woodlands, forest edges, and open fields with scattered trees. However, this species is also found in urban and suburban settings, flooded swamps, and marsh edges. This photo was taken at Heaven Hill Farm, near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

A male Red-Shafted Northern Flicker launches towards a higher vantage point to sing about his territory and how desirable a mate he is. Shot in the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge just outside Portland, Oregon. Vertical color photo: A large branch comes up diagonally from the lower right of the image:. It's obviously dead: the bark is gone, and near the bottom of the frame it's covered in moss and mushrooms. It end to the left of the vertical mid point of the image. From there, a male red-shafted northern flick is launching into the air. His wings are spread wide, exposing the red flight feathers. His tail his red, tipped in black, his breast white with blacks spots, with a black triangle just under his neck. His head is gray, with a brown crown and a brilliant red cheek patch, and another red patch at the back of the crown. He's looking up at the at next place he's targeted for food and performance. The background is evergreen tree branches.

I heard strange chirping outside, and I knew it wasn’t Brady Tkachuk. A large bird was sitting on top of a utility pole, another in our tree. Both came to our suet feeder briefly and then flew off. It was a #NorthernFlicker couple! Aww. ❤️
