Vertical color photo: A large branch comes up diagonally from the lower right of the image:. It's obviously dead: the bark is gone, and near the bottom of the frame it's covered in moss and mushrooms. It end to the left of the vertical mid point of the image. From there, a male red-shafted northern flick is launching into the air. His wings are spread wide, exposing the red flight feathers. His tail his red, tipped in black, his breast white with blacks spots, with a black triangle just under his neck. His head is gray, with a brown crown and a brilliant red cheek patch, and another red patch at the back of the crown. He's looking up at the at next place he's targeted for food and performance. The background is evergreen tree branches.
