painting:- an elegant 19th century room full of large houseplants. huge windows are letting a lot of cool wintery light. many of the plants appear to be planted in hollowed out tree trunks. there are a few bits of furniture around the room including a footstool that looks like a small padded rocking chair.

Created as one of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch’s earliest lithographs and issued in multiple color and compositional versions, “Madonna” belongs to the Frieze of Life, his series on love, anxiety, and death. A woman with warm, rose-beige skin tilts her head back, eyes closed and lips softly parted, as if exhaling. Her long black hair flows over bare shoulders and merges into a dark, oval halo that pulses with red-blue tonalities. She raises both arms behind her head, creating a supple arc through neck, chest, and torso. Light pools on the abdomen and sternum while the flanks dissolve into velvety shadow. The lithographic grain gives her flesh a living softness against the enveloping field. In color impressions like this one at the Ōhara Museum of Art, the aura reads almost atmospheric (part halo, part night) so the body seems to hover between apparition and presence. In variants with the decorative frame, three sides teem with wriggling sperm forms and, at lower left, a tiny curled fetus. This biology-as-border haunts the composition’s edges, charging the stillness with the sense of impending creation. Critics have long noted its deliberate fusion of sanctity and sensuality. The blue halo recalls Marian tradition, yet her body reclaims the divine feminine as source and subject of life itself, inviting us to witness “ecstasy and pain in the act of love.” The notorious border with spermatozoa and fetus turns religious iconography into an image on conception, mortality, and the eternal feminine. Between 1895 and 1902 when this was created, Munch was haunted by illness, death, and a failed love affair with Tulla Larsen. Living in Berlin among Symbolist writers and thinkers, he explored themes of desire, spirituality, and mortality within his Frieze of Life series. Madonna reflects this turmoil by fusing sensuality and sanctity as a meditation on love, loss, and the fragile line between creation and death.

This 1890 painting by Norwegian artist Jacob Kielland Sømme depicts a mature woman seated in profile at a round table near a window. She is dressed in a long, light-colored dress and a dark, patterned scarf covering her head and shoulders. Her posture is slightly hunched as she concentrates on a book held in her hands. The woman wears glasses and appears to be middle-aged. The room is sparsely furnished. A wooden table with a reflective surface is in the foreground, near the window. Several potted plants sit on the windowsill, adding a touch of life to the scene. Behind the woman, there is a tall side table with a woven basket resting upon it. The room's walls are painted a deep blue, creating a cool, somewhat somber atmosphere. The window shows a view of a beach or coastal scene, with suggestions of buildings and sand in the distance. The light streaming in from the window creates a contrast with the dimly lit interior, highlighting the woman and her book. The overall mood of the painting is serene, pensive, and slightly melancholic. The loose, expressive brushwork suggests an impressionistic style, with a focus on capturing the light and atmosphere rather than precise detail. Sømme often painted scenes from everyday life in Skagen, including fishermen at work, beach scenes and landscapes. His paintings were popular with critics and collectors alike, and he received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime. Skagen was home to the Skagensmalerne (aka Skagen Painters), a group of Scandinavian artists who gathered in the village in the northernmost part of Denmark, from the late 1870s until the turn of the century. The artists shared the fact that they were inspired by naturalism and open-air painting and sought new places and motifs. Skagens Museum was founded in 1908 in order to collect and preserve the works of the Skagen artists’ colony in the environment in which they were created.

A painting done entirely in earth tones shows a lighthouse tower painted white with a horizontal red band standing on a rock on the shore of a turbulent sea. Massive, dark storm clouds dominate the scene, with a clearer patch of sky at the lower left suggesting a storm is either gathering or passing.
