I found a very nice division of Maxillaria tenuifolia. I counted two spikes but there may be more. Can't wait for the coconut-cream-pie scent.

Oncidium Aka Baby 'Raspberry Chocolate'. The beginning of a new pseudobulb and a quick spike update. This plant is very thirsty and grows very fast for an Orchid.

A plate of two photos of roots clinging to a smooth palm trunk. On the left, the roots are dry and silvery in color (with reddish root tips). On the right, the trunk has dried, but the roots are still dark and full of water. Photo by Scott Zona CC BY-NC 2.0.
Many epiphyte roots (especially orchids) have an outer layer, the velamen, that is dead & spongy. It holds onto water until the plant can take it in. On the left, the roots are dry; on the right, the roots are still wet even though the palm trunk is dry. #roots #epiphyte #Orchidaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±
Photo of a moth orchid growing on a smooth palm trunk. The plant has several fleshy leaves, and many roots can be seen clinging to the trunk. The plant bears three inflorescences with white flowers. Photo by Scott Zona CC BY-NC 2.0.
This Phalaenopsis hybrid growing on a palm trunk is exposed to daily rain (or irrigation) followed by daily droughts. It survives by having thick, leathery, water-storing leaves & thick roots. #Orchidaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±
Photo of an epiphytic orchid perched with its root exposed on the side of a palm trunk. The orchid has clusters of tall, narrow pseudobulbs topped with long narrow leaves. It is producing dozens of brown and yellow, spotted flowers. Photo by Scott Zona CC BY-NC 2.0.
Letβs talk epiphytes. This is Cyrtopodium punctatum, which has large pseudobulbs (swollen stems) that store water. The plant may get rain every day, but as an epiphyte without contact with the soil, it dries out quickly. It must store water to survive the daily drought. #Orchidaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±

Bulbophyllum cornu-cervi (big ?). It seems to have two growth points, which is sweet. the new leaf has tripled in size in the short few weeks I've had it. So far, so good. Substrate is fine for another few months but the pot needs weeding...
