Firecrest is a long overdue addition to the patch list. Found by a visiting birder, who'd called to see a passing steam train, in the bushes where I always fancied one. Hopefully add it to the bike list on Friday, though doubt it'll show this well again! #Orgreavebirds #UKBIRDING #Yorkshirebirding
Jack Snip, a species I thought I'd lost on the patch due to the development of favoured areas. Hopefully, these SUDS drains will continue to hold them through the winter. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding #Yorkshirebirding
A Spotted Flycatcher on a bramble.
Back on the patch and the 10km from home. Caught up with this late Spotted Fly (only the 4th patch record) that's been around since Wednesday and a couple of Pintail on Catcliffe Flash, both NFY. #Orgreavebirds #Yorkshirebirding #UKbirding
And just like that, winter appeared. Never had September Whoopers before, also a decent movement of Pinkies, with cheering.350 between 8 and 9am. #Orgreavebirds #UKBIRDING #Yorkshirebirding
A brief, though, very vocal Whimbrel and an unusually showy Great White on the way to work this morning. #Orgreavebirds #ukbirding #Lowcarbonbirding #yorkshirebirding
A typically brief Little Tern this morning and an adult Yellow-legged Gull, both NFY. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding #Lowcarbonbirding
White-winged Tern on a massive tern rail. Orgreave 9th July 2016.
One of my favourite finds. Tracked it as it briefly visited, and shunned, prime inland sites such as Fairburn and Old Moor, predicting it would pass through the patch. A quick bus ride from work and there it was, on my humble patch, where it stayed for several days. #Orgreavebirds ##ukbirding
Adult Mediterranean Gull
The year tick drought, for patch and 10km from home, seems to be over, with 6 NFY in the last week. A lovely adult Med'Gull this evening and a Common Scoter taking the lists to 124 & 133, respectively. #Orgreavebirds #Lowcarbonbirding ##UKBIRDING
A surprisingly productive journey to work this morning, with a Black-necked Grebe, Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwits and a Gropper. The latter 2 being NFY. #Orgreavebirds ##UKbirding #Lowcarbonbirding
Great morning on the patch, started with 2 Avocets, 2 Blue-headed Wags, Whimbrel, and only my 3rd Osprey here. Takes me to 123 for the 10km from home #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding #Lowcarbonbirding
A Great Egret laughing about how he can stand on the world's biggest tern rail!
The annual Orgreave field trip today, where I allow folk to visit MY patch ๐ A Great Egret and Marsh Harrier the highlights and NFY. #Orgreavebirds #UKBIRDING
Bar-tailed Godwit
Green Sandpiper in flight.
The Barwit did the decent thing and moved on to the patch year list. Another typically brief Green Sand and first Sedge Warbler of the year. #Orgreavebirds ##ukbirding
Adult Little Gull over water at Orgreave Lakes.
Adult Little Gull on the water at Orgreave Lakes
20 miles covered 8 bodies of water checked and finally scored at the 2nd go at the patch. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Lovely atmospheric morning on the way to work, with 15 Little Egrets on Woodhouse Washlands and a typically brief Green Sand on Orgreave. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Female type Black Redstart, Orgreave.
This beauty made up for dipping a Little Gull on the ride home and takes me nicely to 100 for the 10Km from home and 91 for patch. #Orgreavebirds #Lowcarbonbirding
Always feel a bit melancholy watching these guys depart. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Whoopers in the mist on the ride to work. #Orgreavebirds ##UKBIRDING
A silhouette of a Water Rail.
Red Kite
Silhouettes seem to be my thing this weekend. The Warer Rail was like a fish out of water when it broke cover and wandered on to the bare shoreline. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Whooper time begins. ##Ukbirding #Orgreavebirds
2 Black-necked Grebes on the patch this morning. Ignoring each other at opposite ends of the lake. #Orgreavebirds #Patchworkchallenge
1st winter Mediterranean Gull in the foreground.
Steady on the patch at the moment. A Woodcock yesterday was my 139th sp of the year, hopefully a couple more to come before the year's out. A 1st W Med' Gull this morning was the first winter record for a few years. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Grey Partridge sheltering from storm Bert.
Really felt these guys this morning, at least I can go home and get dry. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
A decent pre-roost this evening with 2 Caspian Gulls (1st and 2nd w) and a joint personal best of 35 Common Gulls. Downside, tripod leg fell off, leaving me with 2 crippled tripods now ๐ #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
No camera again and a Ring-tail Hen Harrier was my reward. New for patch ๐ฅณ #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Sussed it, leave the camera at home and you'll get better views of everything. It's like they know. Barn Owl and Green Woodpecker the best of my pre-work walk this morning. #Orgreavebirds
Probably my most enjoyable patch session this year, despite the gloom. Common Scoter, Rock Pipit, several Snipe, Stonechat and best of all a fresh in Shortie. Even standing around the bushes failing to find a Yellow-browed was fun. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Had to play my Joker today with a given Goldcrest and not so given Tawny Owl new for patch year. Total now. Standing at133. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
For a brief period the patch had an east coast vibe this morning, with bushes full of Chiffchaffs. Best of all the 3rd site record of Spotted Fly alongside 3 Whinchat. + 2 groups of Scoter and yesterday's Arctic Tern. Seems that the easterly claggy spell is over for now๐ #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Conditions over the last few days on the patch have looked very promising with clag and almost constant northeasterlies. Yesterday produced Common Scoter, Hobby and Whinchat. Today juv Med Gull and a juv Arctic Tern late afternoon. #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding
Felt rare this morning on the commute. An extended visit produced 2 Sandwich Terns, a Red Kite and a steady movement of hirundines. Hopefully something on the ride home #Orgreavebirds #UKbirding #LowCarbonBirding
