A huge bird of prey, gliding in the air. Its eyes are fixed onto the camera. The image is in black and white, with a white border.

This red kite was keeping a watchful eye on me... 🦅🪶

Tundra Bean Geese on Otmoor RSPB reserve
My first Tundra Bean Geese in southern England since 2007, and my first ever in Oxon, were part of the flock of 18 birds on @rspbotmoor.bsky.social this afternoon. Good to see @tmbirding.bsky.social and @josephtobias.bsky.social too 👌🏻

Kingfisher, Lye Valley, Oxford.
Finally caught up with the Kingfisher that has been visiting the Lye Valley top ponds. Also a Blackcap and a couple of Chiffchaffs are still hanging on into November in the Lye Valley woods.

Flyer designed by the local eco group. Thursday 6th November, 7:30pm, Coach House, Quarry Road, Oxford OX3 8NU - see you there!
If you are in the Oxford area next Thursday, I’m giving a talk on the birds of the Lye Valley area. It’s a multimedia presentation (pictures and calls!) covering the resident and migratory birds recorded in this part of the city. See you there!

Rainbow across entrance track to RSPB Otmoor reserve Oxfordshire autumn afternoon
Beautiful autumn colours at Otmoor this afternoon. Dunlin & Great White Egret from first screen + Marsh Harrier were #birds highlights. A lot of berries awaiting arrival of winter thrushes @rspbotmoor.bsky.social #ukbirding #OxonBirding
Twite at Farmoor Reservoir
Twite at Farmoor Reservoir
Twite at Farmoor Reservoir
Twite is a rare bird in Oxfordshire, the last being in November 2011. News of two birds at Farmoor late afternoon led to mad dash out to the reservoir on the bike, but great views in fading light and rain

This Reeves’s Pheasant was filmed yesterday by runner Julien L’homme (one of the fastest men in the county) on Shotover Hill, Oxford. An impressive burst of speed as the pheasant overtakes Julien, this is the nearest thing you’ll see to a Roadrunner in Oxfordshire!

Photograph of a camera on a tripod. On the screen of the camera there is a deer in focus, with some settings around the outline. In the background there is a fence & some bushes (out of focus).
Went on a reccy to #RSPB Otmoor last night, testing out new lens & seeing what’s about. First time there & was impressed, will likely go back at some point this/next week.

Reed bed at Otmoor Oxfordshire in evening light
Otmoor: #150 for the year list with Reed Warbler (👇they’re in there somewhere 😉) though tbh this evening they were being out-sung by the Sedges and the Cetti’s @rspbotmoor.bsky.social #birds #UKbirding #OxonBirding
Farmoor Reservoir: 4 Little Gulls on F1 this morning #OxonBirding #birds
Port Meadow: Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Pintail, particularly animated Gadwall, Great White Egret, 5 Oystercatcher, 2 Chiffchaff i.e. lots of winter birds all in glorious spring sunshine ☀️ #OxonBirding
For interest to anyone on #OxonBirding. c.300 Linnet (I presumed) in wild bird cover next to The Boxing Hare, Swerford yesterday pm. #DriveByBirding.
A pre-planned trip to @rspbotmoor.bsky.social this morning was well timed with a Green-winged Teal found there earlier from the first screen. #oxonbirding #ukbirding
I'm seeing more Pintail on my local patches this winter. Four on one site, and two on the other - I felt lucky to have just one turn up in the last 7 years.

Otmoor in the thaw - highlights Stonechat, Yellowhammer, plenty ducks from first screen incl 200 Shoveler, 20 Pintail. Pair Marsh Harriers hunting together @rspbotmoor.bsky.social #OxonBirding
Hawfinch
Hawfinch
The spoils of a Christmas Day outing with the kids, at least 5 Hawfinch in the trees above East Lockinge Church. Probably more but not easy to keep track of! Fantastic birds in a beautiful setting. #UKbirding #Oxonbirding

Bearded Tit - male in flight
It only took four visits, 8+ hours and a change of year until I finally managed to connect with the Bearded Tit pair at Radley GPs. Not an easy bird in Oxon so very pleased to finally add it to my county list. Well worth the frostbite this am for cracking views. #UKbirding #Oxonbirding
Impossible to ignore the lure of an Oxon mega, especially with an unexpected free day. A nice year tick too! These two showed a lot better than the last Velvet Scoter I saw in the county in 2021. @birdguides.bsky.social #ukbirding #birding #oxonbirding
The very late Sand Martin remains on my local STW in Abingdon, extending its status as the latest record for the species in the county. #oxonbirding #patchbirding #ukbirding
A dream patch find this morning on my urban Oxford patch, with the second Marsh Tit in 6 years completely eclipsed by a #patchtick Yellow-browed Warbler! With a decent bit of vizmig, 43 species is also my highest total of the year so far: ebird.org/checklist/S1...

Ultimate record shot of Cattle Egret
In 5 years, Cattle Egret has gone from county rarity to established breeder. Still good to see two with these cows on a family walk near Thrupp today (with fond memories of the Scop’s Owl). Also Grass Snake & Banded Demoiselles (photo by my 12-year old) by the canal #UKBirding #Oxonbirding
The wet winter has changed the habitat for my BTO Waterways Breeding Bird Survey near Cuddesdon. Record counts of gulls, plus Little Egret, Yellow Wag, Cuckoo & Mandarin. Fewer woodland species, with the woods flooded and access limited #oxonbirding

Fantastic to hear this newly arrived Grasshopper Warbler singing in urban Oxford this morning:

The first Hooded Crow seen in Oxfordshire since 1982 was found at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, this morning. No sign sign since, but it is being looked for.
