10 years ago today we received the closure notice for our very first #playstreet on my street in North Shields; we haven’t played out for a couple of years but I’m still proud of all we did and achieved over the past 10 years, on our street and beyond.

Massive thanks to @carolinewoodley.bsky.social @willnorman.co.uk @joewalkeruk.bsky.social @jasminemartins.bsky.social for coming to support our Enfield Road #Playstreet today (and for all your ongoing support and efforts to improve local roads)
A #PlayStreet event gave children a chance to safely play, laugh and connect outdoors - free from traffic and car fumes.
We temporarily closed a section of the road to through traffic, turning it into a joyful, people-first space.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped to organise, support and attended our wonderful #PlayStreet event in conjunction with Kings Heath Primary School and the @cleancitiescampaign.org on Friday. Special thanks also to @playingout.bsky.social for inspiration and guidance.

👇This is what FREEDOM looks like!
Our #PlayStreet last Friday allowed kids to cycle, climb, pull ropes, scoot, roll hula hoops and make a chalky mess
🚧This joy can be so easily missed unless we make an effort to prioritise space for #play

I loved visiting @hwschoolstreet.bsky.social #PlayStreet this afternoon!
Seeing the children able to run and play together without fear of cars was amazing - and it made me wonder why it can't be like that all the time. Streets should be for people!
What’s free, fun, good for you and happening TODAY?
🛼 Our #PlayStreet of course!
Whether you’re 9 or 90 join us for some wheeling around, tug of war, hopscotch and skipping etc
🍰Bonus activities include eating cake and the freedom to not worry about cars!

☑️ Will we be chalking up another success?
Depends how it’s measured.
✅Kids spilling out of the school gates safely
✅Friends wheeling up and down the road together
✅Parents relaxed and having space to chat
✅Better air quality outside school

Worth reading this thread for all sorts of perspectives on #playingout, and then checking out playingout.net/play-streets... so you can start to organise a #playstreet on your street.

Our inner-London #N7 monthly #PlayStreet when rode closed to 🚙 for <3 hrs is now 2yo. In that time 🛼 🛹 🚲 skills acquired, friendships (made even between some adults..) while the naysayers who objected to the scheme have gone silent 😊

Thrilled we've had 13 expressions of interest from #Shipley residents to run #PLAYSTREET sessions this summer... many cited sense of accountability & encouragement PLAY STREET PIONEERS will provide as reasons they're stepping up now. Here's to a summer of street play! #bd25 #mentoring #community
Great fun #streetsforkids Enfield Road #playstreet today with free healthy food from Streetbox
A residential street in Utrecht. The road is filtered to motor traffic using two bollards. There are tress and greenery and a sign in the top right indicating that this is a "play street"
A little greenery, a few bollards, and a simple sign - suddenly, the street belongs to people again. Safe streets for kids don’t need big budgets, just the right priorities #PlayStreet
Looking down Beaufort Road in St George, Bristol. The picture shows a section closed to traffic, with children chalking and playing in the road.
The #EastBristolLiveableNeighbourhood #EBLN has tamed Beaufort Road to the point that we’ve been able to restart our #PlayStreet @playingout.bsky.social ❤️❤️❤️
We love a #PlayStreet
They’re reasonably easy to organise too

A screenshot of a Facebook memory with photos of our street’s first play street on 13th Dec 2015
Tonight, I bumped into my neighbours from one side in the pub and had a lovely time, and then on the way home - realising I’d brought out the wrong keys 🤦🏻♀️ - knocked on those on the other side for my spare set.
These relationships were born on our #playstreet, started 9 years ago yesterday.
A photo of a temporary traffic order permitting a play street, dated 26.11.15.
It’s 9 years today since we got the traffic order for the first #playstreet on my street, and my activist and academic ‘play on streets’ journey began. I’ve learnt so much, met so many fabulous people (on my street and beyond), and had a lot of fun.

Good to see a #playstreet (with a #bluesky) appear over here!
Halloween chalking and a pumpkin from a previous play street
A collage of pictures of pumpkins, Halloween snacks, a decorated door with a ghost and cobwebs, and a group of girls apple bobbing in costumes in the middle of the street - all during a play street.
Our street is heaving on Halloween, as usual - think I’ve already had well over 150 kids (or 👻🧙💀🧟🧌) at my door.
For the previous 8 years, we’ve had a Halloween #playstreet (see pics) and I’m kind of sad we don’t again, but it’s lovely seeing the street so full of kids and families having fun.
RIP EIliott Erwin (www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...) - I don't know a huge amount about his photography - I do know he took two amazing images of children playing on a Wallsend #playstreet, Davis St, in 1969, since demolished. It's awesome that these kids were celebrated in this way.
