Nothing screams diving in Big Sur/Monterey quite like dragging yourself through thick Ptery beds 😂

Ive also heard that you can get approximate ages for individuals by counting rings in their stipes, like rings on a tree!

I simply cannot express how much I love historic algae pressings 😍

Except I absolutely will touch the plants (in situ, not once pressed) #phycyeah

We need kelp forests, and now kelp forests need us!

I’m proud to be working on behalf of @opc-california.bsky.social with state, federal, academic, community, and tribal partners to help the kelp!

I may be *a little* biased, but this panel absolutely rocked!

So amazing and inspiring to hear from leaders in kelp forest restoration speaking about the state's efforts to protect and restore kelp forests! #phycyeah!

Century-Old Seaweeds Discovered in Carpinteria Attic Rare species collection shows ocean changes after industrialization and plastics.

"Century-Old Seaweeds Discovered in Carpinteria Attic"

What an awesome story and legacy! While we lack conclusive baselines for nearshore temperate ecosystems, archives like the one found in Ms. Sanchez's attic help us understand and track change #phycyeah! 🦑🧪

An imagine of an underwater rocky reef. In the foreground is a school of blue rockfish with their distinctive "war paint". Towering above the reef and fish is a forest of elk kelp. A long green-yellow stalk is capped by a bulbous air bladder, which sits below the antler-like branching pattern that gives this kelp its name. The blades of the kelp are long and flat and flow in the current.

I may be biased, but elk kelp is *my* favorite canopy former

The elusive elk #kelp (Pelgophycus porra) doesn't typically grow to the surface, instead these deep-dwelling giants can form extensive subsurface canopies from 20m down to 90m! How cool is that!? #PhycologyFriday #marinelife #phycyeah

So glad to see that #phycologyfriday is still a thing!

Here in California we're lucky to have not one, but TWO species of canopy forming kelps! #Giantkelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and #bullkelp (Nereocystis leutkeana).

Who's your favorite canopy-former?
