How about instead of shunting the water off our yards as quickly as possible if we sink it into the soil in #raingardens? How about if we hold as much of that water in our soil via a living soil sponge of mulch and compost?

Did you know that 15 schools in Greater Manchester now have #raingardens & planters that store 136,000 litres of rainwater, that's over 900 bathtubs’ worth! 🌱

A small dump bed truck in a narrow alley is loaded up with river rocks ranging from small to boulder size. All of the rocks are a light tan to a light grey color. There is an orange safety cone behind the cab of the truck. In the alley, brick buildings can be seen on either side. There are empty white buckets and a half yard blue recycling bin in the foreground. The blue bin is mostly filled with brick fragments that will be reused elsewhere.
A closer in photo of the river rocks in the dump bed. You can see that most of the rocks are palm size, with some much smaller and some larger (towards the front). The hues are light tan, light grey, and a light brown.
Because Sunday's rock reuse for #raingardens went so well, we got an even bigger quantity off site today. The projects are still in DC, but these are public vs residential. 💚 #beneficialreuse
A white plastic bucket of river rocks of slightly different sizes, all of which would fit in the palm of an average hand, rest on the back of an open hatchback. The rocks range from a light tan or brown color with subtle hints of grey.
The individual who was picking up the rocks had empty used mulch bags from her garden work. A light turquoise plastic bag is seen from above filled with the tan colored river rocks. This shot shows some slightly larger ones.
A close-in shot of the back of a black-colored pickup truck bed with a neat arrangement of several rows of stacked brick. Towards the lift gate is a small stack of several bricks awaiting organization. The bricks are hues of pink, salmon, and orange. They range from full to partial sizes. All will be used to create a multi-level pathway to a barn on a historic building renovation.
In the #SundaySpirit of reuse we gave away antique river rock & brick found underneath the prior concrete slab. The rocks will be used to build free #raingardens for DC homeowners & the brick in restoring a multi-building historic property in MD
What role can #raingardens play on busy high streets? We planted a 20m² rain garden on St Giles High Street, @CamdenCouncil, with 130+ plants & bulbs. Come spring, daffodils will create a vibrant streetside ribbon, improving safety, guiding footfall and managing stormwater 🌼💧
In a city where 48% of public spaces and 42% of gardens are paved, every pocket of greenery counts. We planted 4 #raingardens along Upper Walthamstow Road in Waltham Forest right outside homes, turning grey corners into biodiverse, welcoming spaces. 🌱💧
#RainGardens infiltrate water BETTER in the winter than they do in the summer!
We turned a neglected underpass beneath St James Station into a green gateway 🌿 Framed by a bold mural, we planted 163 m² of #raingardens with over 800 plants to bring colour, character and wildlife to the everyday commuter's journey.
Fulbourn Primary in #fulbourn is one of seven schools with #raingardens in #sudsincambridgeschools project for 2025/26. We create spaces for water & nature to support the next generation of eco-citizens through hands-on education and play.

Just over a year ago we planted the Sutherland Road #raingardens with @wfcouncil. 🌱 🌼 What started out as a community planting day is now a vibrant stretch of green space. Just check out the growth! 🌿 #urbangreening
There is also a new ‘deep end’ series being posted bit by bit; in-depth presentations lasting 1 – 3 hours on many topics, inc #XeriscapingDesign, Grasses & Sedges, #RainGardens, etc.
Planting on Amhurst Road @hackneycouncil is progressing fast despite the wet weather. The team has powered through with planting, prep and weeding as the #raingardens take shape. New street trees are in, helping build the green corridor between Hackney Downs and Hackney Central.
How do #raingardens transform the public realm? Acting as natural filtration systems #SuDS:
💧 Slow the flow of water
🐝 Support #pollinators
🌿 Improve #airquality
🌸 Add colour & texture
🌱 Reduce pressure on drainage systems

Our team's been busy with autumn maintenance🍂 Clearing leaves, tidying growth and planting bulbs to keep our #raingardens and #planters looking their best for the months ahead.🌿
Five months of colour and growth at our Downham Road #raingardens in Hackney! 🌿 Planted in May with @hackneycouncil as part of plans for a greener borough, they’re already brightening streets & supporting wildlife. We went back in October to see how they’d bloomed. 🌷 #SuDS
Michael Albanese of #AvesiStormwater and I are finally working together on a project! It’s a long-term series of mostly native plant gardens coupled with several #RainGardens. It’s going to be beautiful, and it’s great working together!
How do you uplift an underutilised residential green space?
Our #landscaping work at South Countess Road with Waltham Forest Council brought #raingardens, gabion seating & new pathways together - boosting biodiversity and improving drainage.

compost, manure, leaf mold, wood chip, straw, seaweed
🌷Irrigation sys as #DripPipe, #SoakerHose, eg @dripirri11.bsky.social's
🌷 #Raingardens w/ Water on site, eg #Bioswale collects #Stormwater runoff, slowly soaks it back into ground
#SuDS don’t just need to be built - they need to be cared for 🌿 Without maintenance, #raingardens can fail. However with it, they thrive - managing floods, supporting #biodiversity, and creating vibrant spaces.
