A small, stumpy hoverfly called a Common Snout perches on the bright green leaf of a chestnut tree, against a black background. She has a distinctive head, with very large brown eyes and a long snout that looks a little like a bird's beak. Her thorax is silvery grey with longitudinal black stripes, and her abdomen is chestnut brown, with a black border that is distinctive to this species. Her legs are black and brown and her wings, which she folds over her back at rest, are longer than her body.
