Absolutely. Movement is often a support, not a distraction. Many students focus better when they can move, shift seating, or take brief breaks. Creating flexible spaces helps students regulate themselves and engage in learning without forcing one rigid model on everyone.

Exactly. What looks like “defiance” is often overwhelm or difficulty getting started. When Gen Ed and SpEd teachers have time to plan together, they can build consistent supports that help students succeed before behaviors escalate.

You’re exactly right. Those intentional brain breaks can make a huge difference—especially for students who need extra processing time. It’s not lost time; it’s what helps many students stay engaged, build confidence, and keep pace with the lesson.

Proactivity over reactivity. A lot of students end up "falling through the cracks" because they were being disciplined instead of being provided support and resources to succeed. #TeacherEd #SpEd

I always push the fact that I'm here to help them learn, but can't read their minds. They need to know I'm on their side but if they're struggling, speaking to me before/during/after class is the only way we can come up with a solution. #TeacherEd #SpEd

Check-ins are huge! Making sure if I notice them struggling to get started, to check if there's a roadblock or they were off-track. Connection builds opportunities for growth. #TeacherEd #SpEd

Movement and breaks within the classroom. My talking stays within 10 minute blocks before we start the activity, and I seat students with ADHD next to students who are able to conceptualize time more easily. This helps my ADHD students keep track of where they should be in #TeacherEd #SpEd

I'm always revising and adapting my materials to make sure to capture most accommodations of my 504 and IEP students, then create separate materials for those needing additional accommodations, but it's a challenging balance to keep material equally challenging. #TeacherEd #SpEd

A4 I think making it clear to students that you are approachable to ask questions or requests is important. Circulating the classroom and checking in with each desk clusters, as well as students you know need extra support, helps facilitates this. #TeacherEd #SpEd

Yes, I think there needs to be collaboration for a success plan that everyone follows. Adjustments for routines, handling disruptions, and challenges are made in all classrooms so the student knows what to expect and can predict, which = more chances for success for the student. #TeacherEd #SpEd

Yes. They don't want to be, and yet once they are labeled, they give up hope on being anything else. Some students are not totally in control of their disruptions, and we truly need to look at the behavior as the problem and not the student. #TeacherEd #SpEd

A5 #TeacherEd #SpEd Some disruptive behaviors are out of their control; they need the opportunity to reset. Case managers should work out a self-regulation plan for outside of the classroom. Teachers, students, and parents can sign off on it, all working together for success. #TeacherEd #SpEd

halesaurus, I agree with about not criticizing a student for not knowing something. I try very hard to spin a wrong answer into a positive of what they have learned. Otherwise, I often mention that the reason we are in school is to learn, thus it is fine not to know something. #TeacherEd #SpEd

A3 It is a matter of finding the perfect match between skills and activity that helps demonstrate knowledge. I have one student who has motor skill problem with writing sentences. Meanwhile, he can draw excellent depictions of the recently covered Social Studies content. #TeacherEd #SpEd

A5 #TeacherEd #SpEd It would be beneficial to have a shared document for teachers to access to for each student w/ an LD where they can add their strategies and modifications that have worked - or not worked - in their classroom so other teachers and the student can have success. #TeacherEd #SpEd

I agree with you. Sometimes there are large gaps in communication between GenEd teachers, SpEd teachers and guidance counselors. #TeacherEd #SpEd

Hannah, I have done this for a while now with tests. Where the general education students might have short answer questions to write, the special education students will have multiple choice. Like you mentioned, it does not change them demonstrating what they have learned. #TeacherEd #SpEd
