This landscape aspect image is a study of acer tree leaves turning autumnal, with a deep orange, blurred backdrop of swamp cypress leaves. Swamp cypress where introduced to the UK in the 17th century and are one of only a few conifers that are deciduous, the feathery leaves turning orange or russet-red in autumn, dropping them in the winter. The left side of the image is predominantly green and the right side is predominantly deep orange. The leaves of the acer tree, which have seven pointed lobes, are largest and in sharp focus in the centre and the left side. They have a mix of colours from rich forest green, paling to lime green, yellow, orange, red and hints of purple. Between the foreground leaves and the orange background are partially blurred acer leaves hanging down from the other side of the tree's canopy. They are mostly green and yellow, seemingly floating in the air like polka dots against the orange background on the righthand side.

I shot the negatives with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I then asked Gemini AI to reconstruct images: a shore shot from boat on the Dniéper River, a church, a painted sign. Taken in the summer of 1969 with a boxy, little Kodak. A step back in time.

Paul’s still life of a decaying zinnia flower from his greenhouse shows how nature has a natural cycle that is beautiful even in death, and that new life, in the form of many patches of textural mold, can flourish from the old. The flower has a yellowed stem with patches of black mold. The old orange petals have drooped down toward the stem and are covered with many white and yellow molds that are in spore.

This portrait aspect landscape image from Jonny has horizontal and then diagonal lines of silhouette treetops and sloping hillsides, that are separated by layers of pale grey, hazy mist. This composition leads the eye up to a sunrise sky that starts with purple tones at the horizon and warms through peachy tones to orange and apricot in a wonderful contrast to the cooler foreground.

David’s square minimalist image is a long exposure of two abandoned shopping trolleys that have washed downriver into the estuary where they are becoming encrusted with molluscs and seaweed and are entangled in what could be string of line from fishing nets. The trolleys are on their sides, set in opposing corners of the square with a single string linking the exposed back wheels. The way they are captured and processed makes them look as if they’re slowing sinking into milk.

Stephan’s landscape image captures a moment of stunning natural light, but don’t underestimate the hard work reaching the viewpoint and the patience waiting for the clouds to break. The scene is composed of a valley between two sloping hillsides with a small river winding its way from the lower left and deeper shadows, diagonally to the upper right. Patches of snow delineate shadowed gullies on the hillsides. The valley becomes more lit with golden light towards the horizon where an almost circular gap in the clouds is filled with hazy light. Is it heavenly or otherworldly?
