Following her line of sight, Soap laughed, "No wonder yer so excited, been ages since ye've seen another pup, hmm?" A group of three had just entered the park, a young Golden Retriever bouncing along beside them. When Whisky whinged again, the puppy noticed her, nearly pulling the girl holding the leash off her feet. "Honey! We've talked about this," the girl, a small blonde teen, scolded the pup, "Just because you want to be friends with every dog doesn't mean every dog wants to be friends with you!" Looking down at his own dog, Soap nodded, "She has a point." He was pointedly ignored. Another voice called out, "Ello! Is your dog alright with others?" Turning, Soap grinned at the boy. Tarnos focused on his magic, weaving basic spells for binding and protection. Once finished, he sent the spellwork out to wrap around her neck, and the dark green tendrils encircled her gently. “All done,” he said lightly, pulling his hand away. She frowned and felt at her neck, her fingers passing through the immaterial collar. “You won’t feel it unless you try to run,” he explained. “Then it’ll tighten about you until you pass out.” Her lip trembled and her eyes went glassy, and he sighed. “It’s only temporary. You won’t need it once we reach home.”

A burly guard led him to a smaller tent where the girl was sitting on a stool, her meager belongings in a pack at her feet. Her hands were bound and tethered to the tent-pole, her eyes red-rimmed as though she’d been crying. “This is your husband now,” the man said gruffly, pointing to Tarnos. She shook her head, eyes wide. “No, he can’t be!” “You’re lucky you found a proper husband instead of being sold to a brothel, a delicate elfling like you,” the guard retorted. “At least you only have to serve one man now, eh?” “But he’s not a man!” she wailed. “He’s a – a – a monster!” Tarnos worked to keep the smile off his face. This was better than he’d hoped.

He was mulling over his lunchtime fare, eyes distant, and she summoned the courage to speak. “Master,” she said softly. “Hmm?” he replied, still staring down at the food. “I don’t mean to overstep, master… but it’s been some time since you last visited the bathhouse.” “So it has,” he murmured. “If you don’t wish to go out, master… then perhaps… I could help you bathe instead?” He looked down at her pensively, and she lowered her gaze, trying not to fidget. She breathed slowly, willing herself to be patient, until he finally nodded. “A bath would be good. Tell Ovidia I only need a pot’s worth of boiled water added to the cold.” She nearly sighed with relief. “Yes, master.”

But he was too angry to calm her fear. Spying her small bundle next to the mat, he squatted and began untying it. “Master?” she whimpered, but he didn’t reply. Taireus opened the cloth and lay it flat on the floor, then began spreading her belongings about. A comb, some ribbons, a covered dish. He opened this last item, finding a pungent ointment he recognized as healing salve for the hands. Returning it to the floor, he surveyed the rest of her paltry possessions until he saw a small pouch. Warily he picked up the string bag, feeling it full of something finely ground. He pulled it open and gave a small sniff. A distinctive, smoky scent wafted out.

Descending the stairs, he made for the small dining room where he’d eaten with his parents as a youth. There had been debates and declamations and much laughter in those days, but now the room was empty save for him. Taireus reclined on the chaise, leaning on his left arm to leave his right hand free. Absently he wondered what Talia had managed to prepare for him, when he’d been expected to eat lunch at Opiter’s home. He’d been prepared to wait, but Hostur had informed him the meal was ready to be served. Awaiting the slap of sandals to announce Ovidia’s presence, he startled to see Rose enter carrying the food tray instead. Her bare feet padded nearly soundlessly across the mosaic floor as she retreated, and he realized guiltily that she must not have any shoes to wear. Still, he kept his face neutral as she returned with a second set of dishes, arranging them carefully on the low table before him. "

Rose stared down at it, still processing the meaning of the shining thing in her hand. “Is that her first tip?” exclaimed Mirelia, one of the younger bath slaves. “And it’s silver?” “Who got a silver tip?” asked another slave, poking her head through the door. “It’s Rose!” gasped yet another voice, and soon she was surrounded by jostling figures eager to catch a glimpse of a coin rarely seen by slaves, worth twenty copper ones. “What did you do?” asked Ganuta, a pleasure slave who’d taken Rose under her wing when she first arrived.
