A small bird stands on a small sand dune on the beach. Its legs are thin and dark gray. Its body is round and puffy. Other than its brown wings and the brown sides and top of its head, its feathers are pure white. Its beak is short, black and very pointy.

On a nice day back in April, I hopped on my motorcycle and rode out to Nehalem Bay to try and see some of the Snowy Plovers nesting there. I got lucky and was able to find a couple!

Snowy Plovers live on the edge - their nesting grounds are a thin strip of bare sand between the grass and the ocean. As people impacted this land, their numbers cratered. Thanks to the diligent efforts of a passionate few, they are doing a bit better lately.
