Kazakhs usually name a place by its nature. An example of this in the photo: Egindikol district. literally a harvest lake. You can see a lot of harvs and a lake on the map😉

A social media card from Cadernos de Linguística featuring a quote from an article by Cunha and Lourenço (2020). At the top, the text reads: "Read in Cadernos de Linguística". Below it are four green buttons labeled "Toponymy", "Territorial Memory", "Urban Identity", and "Indigenous Lexicon". The main quote says:
"Naming places is a political and social act: names shape identities, forge symbolic connections between people and territory, and continue to influence how we live and experience a sense of belonging in urban spaces.”
At the bottom, the citation: Cunha, E. L.; Lourenço, L., 2020.
There is a minimalist corner icon with radiating lines in the lower-left.

Place names often outlive the languages from which they came.

This study shows how words from Indigenous Brazilian languages still define urban neighborhoods today — quietly preserving cultural memory.

Clearly, our work on #toponymy must have recently been used somewhere in linguistics, coz I've been receiving these review requests from linguistics journals.
Sorry guys, my expertise in that field is so totally absent that sometimes I can't even understand the abstract...

Evidence that a #goth-toponym was on the move from VästerGötland to Côte d'Azur. The case of #Simbo, south-west in #Lidköping comm. to La #Simboula in #Eze comm.

#Simboula means land of #Simbo.

Descendants of goths, Yes but not only. Toulouse was the main town of a Visigoth kingdom. What is less or unknown, are those common toponyms in the suburbs of both Toulouse and Gothenburg. #toponymy
Cagot = a goth with horse (not with dog. As some may believe)

How often does it happen that a place takes name from a company that occupies it? In #Warsaw, a whole city district of Ursus was named after a company that used to have a gigantic mechanical factory here, manufacturing tractors and other vehicles for about a hundred years. It had a few different […]

Donc rien à voir avec du gascon, ni du latin, ni du celte, de l'occitan, ni de germain ou issu-de-germain...😁 Comme la plupart des toponymes du sud-ouest français.😜

Google Maps to rename 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' for US users The change will be visible in the U.S., but it will remain 'Gulf of Mexico' in Mexico. Outside of the two countries, users will see both names

Google Maps has history of appeasing govts who want names, borders shown differently. Often it shows different versions to people in different countries, and says it will do that here too.

In interesting show of restraint, #USA president's order to change "#GulfOfMexico" to "#GulfOfAmerica" on govt maps seems to specify that only the part under US jurisdiction is being renamed. (link in comment)
