A log (red alder) on a shore. It has lost its bark, scoured off by rushing water, and successive layers of the cambium have been peeled off, leaving a patchwork of smooth, orange wood fringed with pale splinters, layered over the previous year's growth. The top layer is blackish. At the end of the log, the frayed heartwood protrudes. The log rests on another, older log, suspended over smooth, water-scrubbed stones. At the back there's a similar log, but this one is darker, rotting away.
