The background is a deep, blurred green, not typical of autumn, as the photographs were taken at the end of summer, shortly before these birds began their migration to Africa. 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): A hoopoe probes a hollow in a tree branch with its long beak, searching for insects to eat. The deep green background with brown tones, quite out of focus, indicates that the image was taken at the end of summer. By the time I publish these images, in December, the hoopoes of the Iberian Peninsula have migrated to Africa, to lands south of the Sahara. Being a migratory bird, it's probably gaining as much weight as possible before beginning its post-nuptial journey across the Strait of Gibraltar and the Sahara to who knows what countries in Central Africa. 🌍🌏 Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops) The Eurasian Hoopoe is a striking bird with a prominent fan-like crest that it can raise or lower. Its plumage is a warm cinnamon colour, contrasted with bold black and white stripes on its wings and tail. It has a long, slender, downcurved bill. This species is widely distributed across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Many populations in the northern part of their range are migratory, while African populations are sedentary. They are solitary foragers, using their long bill to probe the ground for insects. They are also known for dust-bathing. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Eight subspecies are recognised.
