A lovely native wasp seen in our Perth Hills garden. One of the solitary Potter wasps from the genus Paralastor as far as I can tell, she was drinking from a bird bath. These wasps often stock their nests with paralysed caterpillars.

Die Zeit der Hornissen (Vespa crabro) neigt sich dem Ende. Vorgestern habe ich das angeschlagene Exemplar gefunden und gestern habe ich ihre asiatische Kollegin auf Nahrungssuche am Blumengeschäft gesehen.

Französische Feldwespe in Seitenansicht auf einer hellen Holzoberfläche. Das Tier präsentiert seine elegante Körperform mit dem charakteristischen schwarz-gelben Farbmuster, den langen orange-gelben Beinen und den prominent sichtbaren Facettenaugen. Die Wespe befindet sich in einer natürlichen Ruhehaltung.
Besonders auffällig sind an männl. Haus-Feldwespen (Polistes dominula) die schwarz-grün geteilten Augen. Ein wichtiges Artbestimmungsmerkmal sind die ab dem 4. Fühlerglied komplett orangeroten Fühler.

This insect I thought was a fly or native bee until I saw its brightly coloured butt. Turns out it's a spider wasp of some kind.
She was carrying a payload of a paralysed spider to stash in a mud nest, then lay an egg on.
