A male White-legged Damselfly rests on a nettle leaf, shot from above with the damsel stretching diagonally across the frame. He is quite large for a damselfly at around 3.5cm long, and he has a very broad black head, with bright blue eyes connected by paler blue transverse markings. His thorax is aqua blue, with a broad black stripe either side of the midline and two narrower black stripes below that on each side. His abdomen is patterned in black and blue. His legs are longitudinally striped in black and white, the tibiae are expanded, and there are sparse feathery hairs along all six legs. His wings are clear, with bright chestnut brown wing spots.
