#WordWeavers 3/4: For which characters do you come up with a backstory?
I don’t ‘come up with’ backstory for any of them. They tell me, when they need to, or it emerges organically, or, somehow, it’s ‘just there’. There’s a lot of…

All the primary characters including antag to varying degrees. More of the tragedies than successes that make them who they are. With plenty unwritten till some thing fits there on the canvas.

Do you use any special means to get to know your characters? E.g. character sheets, prequels, interviews, etc.

I put them in situations that expose their biases. If an important meeting conflicts with a Guardians baseball game, my MC will *oops* forget the meeting.

#WordWeavers Apr 2: Do you use any special means to get to know your characters?

Nope. I do nothing consistent here. I usually have a few notes about who they are/what they want/character development, but it's mixed in with the overall planning.

Important: Unesco Replaces OER Acronym Today brings an important announcement from Unesco pertaining to open education. Those educational resources that have been referred to for the past nine years as “Open Educational Resources” are to be renamed. There are two reasons for the end of the use of the OER acronym. One is that there is continuing debate between those who believe these resources should be called “open” and those prefer to term “free” to describe them. Also, simply referring to them as “educational” resources has been shown to exclude many other areas where they have become increasingly important, such as research and training. As a result, officially they are no more to be referred to as “Open Educational Resources”, or OERs. From 1st April on, they are to be known as “Freely/Openly Enabled Resources Supporting Training, Education, and Research”. Unesco officials explained that while they realize that many people have become accustomed to the now deprecated “OER” terminology, it is important that these vital, renewable intellectual resources be renamed to something that highlights all of the areas where they are transforming education around the world. As such, it is expected that before long, those in the movement will become familiar with and happy to use the new term “FOERSTER” to describe these crucial resources. Please make a note of it!

#WordWeavers Apr. 1: Your opinion on April Fools Day and do you incorporate the day into your work?

Usually not. But one year I couldn't resist, and posted this link in a variety of #OER related communities:

Not really. They sort of appear fully formed. I like the emergent nature; it can surprise me and change the direction of the whole narrative.

Bijou the #TimeTravelingGhost is a cute, cozy slice of life about a ghost that travels through time and has tea with various famous people.

#AprilFools: Yeah, I know I didn’t #fool you.

While Bijou meets several famous people and even shares cocktails with Countess Elizebeth Bathory, one would hardly call it a cute, cozy story—surreal, pulp-inspired, full of cabals and fascists, yes—cute and cozy, no.

What is it about? That is hard to say since Bijou and her companion Emily Pang don’t know either. All they know is that creepy rabbits keep showing up alongside the worst people in history, and they’re determined to find out what is going on and to stop it.

Bluesky has launched an AI assistant called Attie that allows users to design their own social media algorithms and create custom feeds within the company’s AT Protocol ecosystem.

Attie debuted this weekend at the ATmosphere conference, which Bluesky sponsors.

But Bluesky’s userbase did not embrace the new product.

Instead, about 125,000 users have already blocked Attie’s Bluesky account,
making it the second most blocked account on the network,
according to open source data.

Attie only has 1,500 followers,
meaning that about 83 times more users have blocked the account than followed it.

The only account with more blocks than Bluesky’s AI agent is Vice President J. D. Vance,
with about 180,000 blocks
— Attie even surpassed the White House account (122,000 blocks)
and the ICE account (112,460 blocks).

That’s some seriously detested company for a platform that skews left politically.

It's a dangerous tool. I review the latest news on the internet.

Two hours later, I close the tabs to cat videos and Cleveland Guardians updates and get coffee.
