A white duck with a dark head and long red bill is taking off from the waters of a marsh. This is a male Common Merganser. Common Mergansers forage in a range of habitats, including streams, rivers, lakes, coastal bays, and marshes, typically hunting in waters shallower than thirteen feet. They breed on this marsh in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, arriving here in late March or early April as ice melts and open water returns.
