A Garden Spider on her web, holding the partly wrapped body of a Common Wasp she has caught. She is a large orange-brown spider with small white patches on her back forming a kind of cross shape, and legs ringed in brown and fawn.

There we were, #Commonwasp, #Comma, #Ivybee and I sniffing around all the lovely globe-like umbels along the Ivy-draped lanes just north of #Rottingdean and finding all the buds still tightly closed.
I sensed their patience was far greater than mine!

All except for Ivy bee maybe 🙄

I put the dead Velvet wasp on a table, and in minutes a common wasp came and started dissecting it. Good for a comparison in size, a Velvet wasp is large, but not as large as a hornet wasp.

The picture shows a close-up of a wasp with a black and yellow striped body perched on a flower. The flower has vibrant red petals and some brownish, possibly dried, leaves or sepals. The wasp appears to be feeding or resting on the flower, with its wings slightly visible and its legs gripping the petal. The background is a solid red, likely part of the flower, creating a striking contrast with the wasp's colors.

Not quite in focus. I was using my 100 to 400 lens and not macro. However theres’s something I quite like about this image.

I think this is some Cow Parsley and common Wasp?🐝 #flyingthings #commonwasp #wasp #ukwildlife

An exhausted European Common Wasp rests up on a yellow and black plastic power washer nozzle. An extreme close up Macro Photograph showing very fine details on the insect, with an incredible amount of fine hairs being picked out as well as its compounds eyes and mouth parts.

Power Wasping. I think it was asleep as I took the images here as it never moved as I did. Once it had taken in some Tate and Lyle though, it was all good and even waited for me to load up the spoon with more (see video in reply) before buzzing off.

This close-up macro photograph captures a detailed view of a queen common wasp (Vespula vulgaris), resting on a piece of garden furniture. The wasp is sharply in focus against a softly lit, pale background, allowing its features to be observed in striking detail.

Its distinctive yellow and black markings, furry thorax, and translucent wings are all clearly visible, along with its segmented legs, curved antennae, and large, dark compound eyes. The surface of the garden furniture reflects light subtly, enhancing the texture and metallic tones beneath the wasp. This vivid image provides a fascinating look at the insect’s anatomy and is a perfect example of early spring insect activity, when queens emerge from hibernation in search of new nesting sites.

Brought some garden furniture out of hibernation and woke this gorgeous queen wasp out of her own hibernation. Lolled lazily about and let me take a few shots before the Tate and Lyle kicked in, then flew off to start building her colony. Hopefully not too close by.
