M16 - The Eagle Nebula

The Eagle Nebula is a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens, discovered in 1745–46. The dark silhouette near the center of the nebula is the area made famous as the "Pillars of Creation" imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Space!!

Were you lucky enough to see Comet Swan?

Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) was imaged in October as it crossed the galactic plane of the Milky Way. This photo was taken by Daniele Gasparri from his home in the Chilean Atacama Desert.

I am absolutely delighted to share this image of Messier 16, the famous Eagle Nebula. I couldn't wait to point my monochrome ToupTek ATR585M at it and I was not disappointed.

✨ Eagle Nebula – The Pillars of Creation in Gold & Turquoise

Here we see one of the most iconic structures in the cosmos – the Pillars of Creation, embedded in the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) in the constellation Serpens. These gigantic gas and dust formations are star-forming regions – enormous pillars shaped by the light of young stars.
What we see here happened around 7,000 years ago. And perhaps what we consider to be ‘creation’ is long gone.

Taken with the remote telescope of the Vienna Working Group for Astronomy at the legendary Hakos Astrofarm in Namibia – it was my tenth session, and a very special one. Here I can see most clearly the difference between my own many photographs of this nebula taken from my city balcony – Namibia's sky is simply hard to beat 🙂

This gold-turquoise edition was created with a modified SHO colour scheme – it shows the ionised gases in a new light. I am particularly impressed by the close-up, in which the fine structures of the pillars stand out clearly from each other. I didn't think I could bring out so many details at this focal length in the crop! Here are some more lights for more depth, and... Well, it's not going anywhere 🙂

A dark shape drifts in a sea of stars.

This tiny wedge of gas and dust, called a Bok globule, floats inside the Eagle Nebula. One day, it may collapse to form a star.

A stunning image of the Eagle Nebula (M16), a vibrant star-forming region located 6500 light-years away in the constellation Serpens. The image, captured by a 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak, showcases the nebula's iconic pillars of dust and gas, illuminated by bright, young stars. The colors represent different emitted wavelengths of light, revealing the complex processes of stellar birth within this cosmic masterpiece.

For fun I processed the H-alpha data on my Eagle Nebula. It's only an hour so far but it already looks good. Will definitely get several more hours before it's done. I cropped in on the Pillars of Creation to see their detail.

Had some time to kill before WR134 comes up so trained the scope on the Eagle Nebula. Never imaged it before. The new scope is amazing with the detail it brings with shorter exposures.
