Some fantastic enamelled detailing over the entrance to 81 Bothwell Street in Glasgow. This is part of the monumental Scottish Life Assurance Society building, which was built in 1927 and designed by E G Wylie.

A cylinder of sterling silver – an off-cut of silver rod was the starting point. A fine snake chain was bought in to create the pendant neck loop.

By using a series of shaped files, the bean shape was arrived at. Initially the cylinder ends were rounded off and some material taken from the body to create the curved bean shape.

One half enamelled as per customer requirement, the rear half polished and hallmarked. The colour was slightly hit and miss as its a mix of enamelling powders which, like pottery glazes, look nothing like the final colour before firing.
