Photograph taken at up on the wooded hillside walking the circular route between Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens. Love the perimeter of the place - less visitors, away from the famous attractions, gentle and natural. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and well worth a visit. It's expensive if you aren't a National Trust member though. Starting at the bottom of the image, a carpet of white wild garlic flowers covers the ground from which tall, thin trees reach for the sky, covered with their lime green spring leaves. A huge, dark tree trunk arches into the frame up the right hand side and over the too. The light is as it was, a little darker, under the tree canopy.

It was cool to see a place that I had explored and photographed extensively being used as a movie set.

Fountains Abbey. While drawing this I discovered a small watercourse which I had thought was a shadow from a tree. It makes more sense of the stonework on the right hand edge of the drawing.

Fountains Abbey sits in a woody valley. The leafless trees reflect the wintery season and the sky is mottled with cloud. A river flows from the Abbey towards the foreground and curves to the right. The Abbey was founded in 1132 and ruined during the Dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII in the 16th century. It is now a world heritage site.
Enjoyed a frosty day at Fountains Abbey. January skies mean low light even in the middle of the day. There's something about looking forward to the coming year though as life begins again...
